Why is it that starting out with a new computer isn't allowed to be easy? Sheesh, you think everything's going along just great, then it tells you there's some sort of software problem or hardware problem and suddenly you find myself in Safe Mode wondering what the heck is going on. So you fiddle around with things a little, not really knowing what you're doing but thinking that you certainly should be doing something, and you restart the computer in the hopes that everything will be all sorted out. But you find yourself having problems again, and the computer tells you it has to shut down because things just aren't working out between you. You try talking to it, cajoling it into giving you some semi-useful hint as to what's going on, and still you get... not the silent treatment, exactly, but a decided lack of good information. And then, for no apparent reason, your machine partner decides to talk to you normally again, acting as if nothing was ever wrong, while you sit there still wondering what just happened and if it's likely to happen again.

It's been a long time since I got a new computer. I'd forgotten how much I hate this part.

On the plus side, now that I have a computer and mouse talking to each other (I'd been having mouse problems on the old computer for years), I can sit around playing Collapse--which is precisely what I did yesterday in lieu of doing anything remotely constructive. High score so far: 850,842. (I blame [livejournal.com profile] darth_spacey.)

In other news, I need chocolate.

Ah the joy of a new comp. Good luck with that!

Thank you! I'll take all the luck I can get! :-)

OMG! I love super collapse! Haven't played regular collapse... I will beat your high score!! :)

Wow, Super Collapse II! Unbreakable blocks! Oh my! ...Ahem... my high score was ... 1,498,249! Bwa ha ha! :P~

Heh. You did notice that yesterday was the first day I've ever played the game with a functioning mouse, right? I get the impression you've played a bit more than I have. :-)

[identity profile] coffeegrace.livejournal.com 2004-03-20 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, you go the right impression!:) I get totally obsessed with games like that... Tetris being my all time favorite! I'm also obsessed with Gin Rummy...

Oh, I love Tetris! I've never had Tetris on my own computer, though--I've only played it on other people's computers or in arcades back in college. Did find a Tetris CD in a cereal box(!) once, but I have no idea where the CD went. If I find that CD, there's definitely gonna be a new game going on this computer.

I'm fond of Tetris on the gameboy. I also have it on my computer. I get the original Tetris song in my head all the time! And if I get too obsessed with it, I will see the little falling blocks whenever I close my eyes! That's when you've been Tetrisized!

You mean it isn't normal to have little falling blocks in your head? Hmmm... maybe my doctor was right and I really do need to get that rattling in my brain checked out...

[identity profile] coffeegrace.livejournal.com 2004-03-20 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
nah, all you have to do is start playing Tetris all the time. Then you'll be perfectly normal...

Normal? Butbutbut--why on Earth would anybody want to be normal of all things? ;-)

Getting to know a new computer can be a pain. So, what OS did it come with? Windows 98? Feh! *spits* XP is the way to go.

[identity profile] xforge.livejournal.com 2004-03-20 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it''s quite strong enough to run XP.

No, it's really not. Still, compared to a Pentium I, especially one that's dead dead dead? New machine rocks.

The computer didn't come with any OS--I installed Win 98SE from a CD that Pengy sent in an attempt to get my old computer working. And as Forgie pointed out, this puter really can't handle XP.

[identity profile] bunney.livejournal.com 2004-03-20 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, my computer can just barely handle it. I really need to add more memory to it.

I know, I know, And what everyone did was a mitsvah.

Had I thought I could afford it, I would have sent you my old Mac. But then, you'd still be waiting for it.

If you have an old printer around you could beat it to death in front of your new machine to show you mean business.

Hey, there's a thought! The old printer actually got displaced from its perch so I could fit the new computer on it; I can go to where the printer is languishing now and demonstrate what can happen to technological devices who dare to displease me. Thanks for the suggestion!
