Adam Sandler's Left Cheek

Took that political quiz going around...
You are a

Social Liberal
(71% permissive)

Economic Moderate
(56% permissive)

You are best described as a:

Democrat

Taking the quiz a second time sent me far enough into the Economic Conservative zone to get me labeled as a Libertarian (Adam Sandler's left eyebrow. That is Adam Sandler, right? Between MLK Jr. and Donald Trump, anyway).

As you might guess, I'm more amused by the fact that Bush is red and Kerry is blue.

As am I. Coming from a country where the political parties are coloured in the correct way, it kind of blew my mind when first I saw red and blue used in the American way (which was really not until November of 2000). I thought it might have been some kind of statement by the news channel in question, but no, it seemed that was indeed the conventional way of doing things. Very, very strange, and not at all comfortable.

I think the US party colors might've come before red became associated with the left, so that could be a reason. It's too early to recall what each color can mean though, so I will leave it.

Nooooooo. The color associations with the parties weren't standardized till the 2000 elections. Google Answers. And my own memory tells me clearly in the 1980s my Republican parents had me cheering when states turned blue on election night, not red.

I'm so wrong!

Well, the Republicans maybe wanted to disassociate red with socialism, while the Democrats thought blue was pretty.

See, there's a reason why that was when you first saw things standardized that way, and not just because you were in another part of the world earlier. I clearly remember in the 1980s during one of Reagan's elections, my parents (solidly Republican then) cheered when states turned blue on the TV screen. And... I'm not the only one who remembers things that way. Google Answers.

What amused me about the color associations with the particular candidates in 2004 was tea and terriers. ;-)
