Adam Sandler's Left Cheek

Took that political quiz going around...
You are a

Social Liberal
(71% permissive)

and an...

Economic Moderate
(56% permissive)

You are best described as a:

Democrat

Taking the quiz a second time sent me far enough into the Economic Conservative zone to get me labeled as a Libertarian (Adam Sandler's left eyebrow. That is Adam Sandler, right? Between MLK Jr. and Donald Trump, anyway).

i took that yesterday and scored 70% permissive social liberal, 33% permissive economic liberal, and also a democrat. but i don't know what you mean about adam sandler. were there pictures i didn't see?

Yes, when you got your quiz results, you could click on tabs to show where you were located relative to celebrities, political ideologies, or the 2004 election results. Unsurprisingly, both you and I would be in the Kerry-voting zone.

oh yeah, that's no surprise. ha. last night, aol had on its welcome screen a poll about whether bill clinton should play elder statesman or critical party leader. i voted for critical party leader. the more he kicks at the POTUS, the happier i'll be.

Just to stir up a little controversy, did you notice that the bulk of the blue voters were concentrated quite strongly in that bottom right corner, but that red voters seemed fairly evenly spread over the rest of the range?

Not sure what the implication there is, though I was amused by the little lone specks of blue out in the Republican and even Fascist territory.

Looking at the graph again, I can see Kerry Blue voters way up at the top left like you say, but there are also Red Bush voters even down in Socialist territory. Which just goes to show that people don't always vote the way you'd expect 'em to.

As you might guess, I'm more amused by the fact that Bush is red and Kerry is blue.

As am I. Coming from a country where the political parties are coloured in the correct way, it kind of blew my mind when first I saw red and blue used in the American way (which was really not until November of 2000). I thought it might have been some kind of statement by the news channel in question, but no, it seemed that was indeed the conventional way of doing things. Very, very strange, and not at all comfortable.

I think the US party colors might've come before red became associated with the left, so that could be a reason. It's too early to recall what each color can mean though, so I will leave it.

Nooooooo. The color associations with the parties weren't standardized till the 2000 elections. Google Answers. And my own memory tells me clearly in the 1980s my Republican parents had me cheering when states turned blue on election night, not red.

[identity profile] cantinera.livejournal.com 2005-09-21 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so wrong!

Well, the Republicans maybe wanted to disassociate red with socialism, while the Democrats thought blue was pretty.

See, there's a reason why that was when you first saw things standardized that way, and not just because you were in another part of the world earlier. I clearly remember in the 1980s during one of Reagan's elections, my parents (solidly Republican then) cheered when states turned blue on the TV screen. And... I'm not the only one who remembers things that way. Google Answers.

What amused me about the color associations with the particular candidates in 2004 was tea and terriers. ;-)

I don't fully agree with where they placed Kerry, either. That might have been where his electoral campaign wanted him to be placed, but a check of his voting record shows he has toed the Democrat party line more often than Ted Kennedy. Meh. It's only some random interweb quiz thingy. No need for me to get all heated and stuff.

There's always good reason to argue with where candidates are placed on these things. After all, a lot of both their voting record and their stated positions are going to be more closely related to political pragmatism than principled ideology. At least, that's likely to be the case if they're remotely successful candidates.

I forgot to check that part when I took the test! Too bad, that would have been interesting. I'm a socialist, btw, much to the consternation of other family members I'm sure.

I like that link :)

You know what? Based on your graph, we ought to agree more often. We're both right on the edge of Libertarianism, and both fairly close to the center.

I'll try harder not to jerk my knee quite so hard in the future... ;-)

I'd appreciate that, Darth. If you'll notice, when I do have a problem with policies and behaviors of the current administration, it generally has nothing to do with classically conservative ideology. So assuming that I'm disagreeing with you because I'm a Flaming Liberal really isn't going to help in any discussion. As I've said before, Kerry was the first Democratic presidential candidate I ever voted for.

I've noticed!

But then I'm a borderline anarchist.
