Success!

Yes, it's true--today I found and purchased an onion! One that isn't obviously rotting!

Yeah, it's the little things that get ya through the night.

Also got some gold kiwi fruits. How did I not know about these before now? They've apparently been available for the last five years, but today's the first time I've eaten any. Tasty little things.

Must stop buying foods from the "Reduced for Quick Sale" section of the store and focus on produce for the rest of the month. Not that there's anything wrong with paying 69 cents for a can of soup they'd usually charge $2.99 for, or $1.49 for a $3+ box of cereal. It's just that I've stocked up enough of the non-perishable foods to last awhile, and it would be nice to still have enough food stamp dollars to buy fresh plant matter at the end of the month.

Fruit is too expensive these days, but it is so tasty.

Other success: Managed to find and sew two buttons onto a shirt that desperately needed them.

Was too dizzy to do much early in the day, so doing laundry, mending a blouse, and shopping for groceries were pretty much all the useful things I did. Also watched this week's House repeat and read a bit of Greg Bear's novel Darwin's Children.

sometimes the small triumphs are the most gratifying. A fine onion is a definite triumph!! I remember seeing fruit trees and "grow your own" strawberries in pots in backs of magazines a while ago. A small container garden maybe?

I don't really feel comfortable trying to grow things when I still can't afford to live here! It would be nice to be able to grow a few things of my own, though.

how differently do they taste from green kiwis?

Gold kiwis are sweeter than the green ones, less tart, and a bit softer. Where green kiwis taste a little bit like strawberries, the gold taste vaguely like peaches. (People on a some websites compare the flavor to mango, melon, and citrus as well.) It's recognizably related to the green kiwi fruit, but different enough to be interesting.

That sounds tastey! I haven't seen any here. I will have to keep my eyes open.

Hurray for onions. And golden kiwis. I never heard of them before I went down to Jungle Jim's near Cincinnati earlier this month. They seem milder than regular kiwi fruits.

Okay, if other people were unaware of gold kiwis till now, then I don't feel too much behind the times.

Cute icon! Is that a new one?

I saw gold kiwis for the first time yesterday. I bought some, but haven't tried them yet...

Try one! After eating more today, I can say with confidence that I like 'em lots.
