Whatever you're celebrating, may you have a good one. Even if all you're celebrating is the end of a calendar year, may it be the best end of a calendar year you've ever had!

Man, am I going to be glad to see the back of 2003. This year has been too character-building for my tastes.

So, I got a Christmas present! I didn't expect to get any presents, at least not till one of my favorite chatters decided to order one for me. She told me that if I got it before Christmas, I'd have to wait to open it. Too bad the deliveryperson didn't leave that option open--they decided to leave the package in a puddle on the front porch, face down in the rain. By the time I realized that the disintegrating piece of cardboard everyone assumed was trash wasn't trash after all, I had to open the box to make sure the contents weren't destroyed. Bleah. But the present is intact and quite makes up for it! Whee!

Went to the grocery store again. Had to practice some self-control now that I remember how good fresh food tastes. My fellow shoppers were, as you'd expect on Christmas Eve, insane. Still, I had fun picking out carrots and pomegranates and mustard greens and organic blueberries (as well as Mint M&Ms, plantain chips, and processed cheese food (I never said I was a nutritional saint)).

The woman in front of me in the checkout line had some difficulty with her electronic transactions, first failing to be able to use her card as a credit card, then getting error-type messages when she tried to use the card as a debit card, and then giving up and marching off to an ATM. Then I purchased my food with an electronic card used for food stamps. The guy behind me in line asked the clerk, "Do you take cash at this place?" The clerk said, "Rarely."

The walk to the store was dominated by rain and gloom--beautiful if you're in the mood for that sort of thing. When I left the store, the sun was shining on a billion fluffy white cloudlets. On my way home, I saw a snowplow fighting to get out of a pothole, which, seeing that there was neither snow nor ice on the road, doesn't give me much confidence in the snowplow's ability to deal with an actual emergency.

I am now officially tired of Christmas music. My timing is impeccable.
