but I dont have anything useful or amusing to say on either of those subjects or both together... :) you know much as I love my lj friends sometimes I wonder a little, but hey they probably wonder about me too so.. +S.
Frankly I'm relieved you have nothing to say on either topic. :-)
I've been staying out of both kinds of discussions, but the realization that both topics had been popular on the same day (at least with the people I've been reading) disturbed me a little...
I kind of think people allow themselves to well indulge themselves a little on live journal dont they and that may be the common point, you know political passions, uncertainty in life what will happen things are boring hey bush sucks bush is hitler etc but I think it is a BIT selfindulgent, and yet... not contemptible just somehow a little tiring. on the other hand if we must we could make a link as I reply to daisy d by calling it freedombation... +S.
nah, i won't address the correlation, if such there be. i'll just sit up and bark like an irritable little dog about the word 'masturbation.' forget the French in fries, why don't they invent a prettier word for ... you know...? they weighed it down with a clunker of a word, like they didn't want us to do it or something.
if i think up a prettier word for it, i'll have them announce it up on the hill. ;)
So do you know the Italian word for it? Italian's such a lovely language, it can't be worse. Then again, the English word derives from Latin, so the Italian word might not be much better.
yeah, exactly, both languages derive it from the latin (manustupration, or something). ick. in italiano, it's masturbazione. ah well. we're stuck with ugly names for it. ha
Hey, the English language got most of its Latinate words from the Norman conquerors, didn't it? So while we sit around eating our Freedom fries, we can blame the French for the ugly word too! Now I'm wondering what the Anglo-Saxon word for it might have been.
ahem well , as daisy says "ahem". hummingbirds now are interesting and your icon reminds me of a nice thing in biography of poet ee cummings how he says to biographer that when he leaves town the humming birds all come and sort of bow and just then six humming birds appear at bottom of window rise to top and then go down to the bottom again... +S.
oh, how wonderful! like the skylarks coming to the window in the merton poem! (i told you about my love for that "jail for ladies" poem, didn't i?) what a lovely thought. :)
Oh, that is wonderful! It's so rare around here to see more than one hummingbird at once, unless perhaps you're in a garden specially designed to attract hummingbirds. The birds such bright little things I can't help but smile whenever I see one.
Last Summer when Dandelion and I were out west visiting a friend in Northern Minnesota, we saw bunches of hummingbirds at the feeder our friend's parents had set up. Dandelion even tried photographing one, although I don't believe she had much success.
No hummingwolfs, though. They seem to be an East Coast species. *smyles*
?? what's all this hoobajube about renaming french fries or some such? i seem to have missed the story, excepting slight references to it...
and WOW about eecummings and the 6 hummingbirds. he's one of my favorite poets! wow, how wonderful!! last year, at my previous apt, i was enjoying my patio and "my" bottle brush tree right outside the screening (i miss her. but i have another bottle brush tree outside my l.r. window at my current place! sometimes she says hi ;) )... you know the bottle brush trees, they get these wonderful red "blossoms", which look exactly like *drumroll please* bottle brushes! :D
well, there i was, and realized there, that amazing flash, was a hummingbird, drinking out of the blossom!!! i'd never seen one before! it is still one of the most amazing experiences i've ever had. what is it about hummingbirds that is so striking and sacred? wonderful.... and i watched, entranced, holding my breath, as it drank, and touched on another blossom or two, and then ZIP, it was gone!
WASHINGTON - Show the flag and pass the ketchup was the order of the day in House cafeterias Tuesday. Lawmakers struck a lunchtime blow against the French and put "freedom fries" on the menu.
And for breakfast they'll now have "freedom toast."
The name changes follow similar actions by restaurants around the country protesting French opposition to the administration's Iraq war plans

Is there any place that the name change doesn't turn up? There was a post about it on a cryptozoology community I read, for heaven's sake. I mean, it's dumb, yeah, but that's not enough to count it as a cryptid.
Oh dear. I wasn't even going to comment on it--everyone else is, so why should I bother? It's ridiculous. Now the paranoid part of me is wondering what this story was supposed to distract us from, you know?
i just think it's so dangerous and foolhardy for people in our government, for corn's sake, going out of their way to alienate parts of europe. hey, we don't need no steenkeeng allies! bonehead congressmen. :(
Well, all this renaming of food is pretty much mental masturbation...
I saw it on the Daily Show last night, Jon Stewart pitched it as Bush making all our foreign policy and war stuffs while Congress were busy passing stupid crap like this, since they don't have the power to do anything else. So Bush makes all the decisions while Congress wanks off.... connection good enough for ya? =)

it's all about freedom
Re: it's all about freedom
You know what amuses me most today? The fact that (if memory serves me) this post got the most comments of any of my LJ posts.
Re: it's all about freedom
Quite the coincidence.
