The cosmos we live in is an amazing place, full of wonders we cannot explain and influenced by forces we cannot see. The best way to live in this world is to keep an open mind, to be open to the possibilities of strange truths we never dreamed of, to understand that we may never understand.

But if you're in a house with old electrical wiring, there's a chance that the flickering lights may not be caused by spirits from the beyond trying to contact you. Honestly. Hard as it is to believe, some things do have a perfectly good physical explanation.

*grin* this has always amused me when it happens, as well.

i have long been known as the family "flake" and so it never ceases to amaze me that there are social circles where *I* function as the voice of reason, logic, and practicality.

the other thing i keep having to remind people is that just because *they* are not believed by everyone about things they believe, it doesn't mean that they should just Believe everything everyone else tells them without at least running it thru the BS detector.

The person I was talking to is someone I know offline, and I've seen her when people are talking about different explanations for things. She gets this look on her face when someone suggests a common sense explanation for things suggesting that she'll consider any explanation except that one. It's almost as if she's so determined to side with the misunderstood "spiritual" people that she refuses to understand that sometimes the washing machine stops working properly because something's physically wrong with it rather than because she wasn't meant to wash that load of clothes today.

Heh. Quite true, though in the house where the conversation took place, things that go bump in the night are generally college students.

It's true. You never know where all the ancient burial grounds are, after all. My parents' favorite place for communing with friendly ghosts was a Civil War battlefield with no buildings on it.

Don't be so sure about that! My family said the house I grew up in was haunted when they moved in--a few months after it was built. (The ghost apparently left before I was born, though. That's always been one of the great disappointments of my life.)

Orange is less than two years old. But I think she's not a ghost so much as a baby djinn. Hey, you should meet her sometime! She makes a mean devil fce (no pun intended... well, okay maybe a little) and she gets frustrated at all the people too afraid to acknowledge her presence.

The Rastafarian is nifty, too, but you'd have to come to the apartment to meet him. He's a house-ghost. He doesn't talk, but he has a very good record of being seen... 5 people to date (I was the 3rd).

I use the term 'djinn' very loosely here. I also like to joke about her being a garden variety djinn, because I met her while i was turning an abandoned lot into a garden. She's not Eastern in any way, as far as i can tell. But she's naturally formless and has a wild streak in her. Those two qualities are what earn her the label 'djinn'. That, and she likes it.

I'm not sure the entities your family dealt with would be pleased that I apply their label to Orange... but who knows. :)

And just because there are mysterious noises and flickering lights with rational explanations does not mean a house is not occupied (I prefer that term to 'haunted' because it implies that the spirit has a right to be there). Like mine, for instance. :)

Not that they're perfectly quiet, but it doesn't make sense to attribute everything to them.

Oh, and I've never seen any reason why supernatural beings shouldn't use natural tendencies of things in order to communicate (or whatever else they might want to do). But the woman I was talking with said she was "creeped out" when she moved to the place, just because she was sure flickering lights automatically meant ghosts. Me, I would've made sure my computer had a good surge protector and not worried about other things.
