Because there is a chance that I will seem terribly biased against the Republican ticket as this election season progresses, I did want to point out one thing John McCain said recently which could be good news for a much-neglected demographic:

"We believe everyone has something to contribute and deserves the opportunity to reach their God-given potential from the boy whose descendants arrived on the Mayflower to the Latina daughter of migrant workers. We’re all God’s children and we’re all Americans."

It's not just confined to time travelling Puritans. On a mildly related note, a Republican explained to me last night that civil rights do not apply to anyone at Guantanemo Bay since the Constitution is based on the Geneva Conventions* and the Geneva Conventions didn't apply to any of the prisoners there.

*Actually, he originally said Versailles Treaty, which confused us all since we had thought that the one thing everyone could agree on is that no one in Guantanemo Bay is a World War I veteran. But now, you are making me doubt this conclusion! Damn you!

Sadly, that sounds like the kind of goof-up I'm likely to make while speaking; The kind where the person listening to me lets out a muffled chuckle while trying to look serious and it takes me way too long to realize what I just said.

Oh, it's the kind of goof-up everybody makes some time or another. I probably wouldn't even notice it in a casual conversation. Thing is, if the info about this speech online is to be believed, this goof awasn't a mistake McCain made while speaking, but a mistake made by the person who wrote the speech! Does nobody do any copyediting before the nominee gets out there and makes the most important speech of his political life?

More importantly, how does the candidate doing the actual speaking not catch it before he utters it? He hopefully reviewed it at least once before making the speech. Apparently, it seemed alright to him. Great. Just what we need, another President making goofy speeches that make no sense.
