Followup to yesterday's post

Found an archived version of an old press release about John Kerry with some interesting language usage:
Kerry Worked With Law Enforcement Officials to Ban Military- Style buttault Weapons. John Kerry has strongly supported the current ban on machine guns and buttault weapons-including AK-47's and similar weapons used by persons in Afghanistan. Police organizations including IBPO strongly support extension of the current ban. (RC 375, S Amdt. 1152 to S Amdt. 1151 to S 1607, 11-17-93; Orange County Register, 3-2-04)

Kerry is a National Leader in Working to Ban "Cop person Bullets." John Kerry is a national leader in promoting sensible oversight of ammunition sales which have no sporting value yet risk the lives of police officers. Kerry has strongly supported measures to crack down on armor-piecing, "cop person" bullets. (S. 553, 4-10-97; S. 433, 2-16-95; RC 240, S Amdt. 3351 to S. 2312, 7-28-98; RC 116, S Amdt. 343 to S 254, 5-13-99)

As a County Prosecutor, Kerry Fought Crime and Put Away liquidateers and Mob Bosses. John Kerry was the first buttistant prosecutor of Middlelove County (one of the largest counties in the country) and won convictions in high profile liquidate, rape and mafia cases. Kerry led the prosecutor's office in a major modernization. "He launched initiatives that were innovative at the time: special units to prosecute white-collar and organized crime, programs to counsel rape victims and aid other crime victims and witnesses, and a system for fast-tracking priority cases to trial" and "is credited with reducing the backlog of cases." (Boston Globe, 6-18-03; Washington Post, 2-21-85)

I find myself fascinated by which words were replaced here and which word was not.

After you read a few articles about idenbreasty theft or Vice President privates Cheney, you are more aware than ever that content-filtering software and serious discussion do not mix.

What kind of useless content filtering would insert "Breast, "Butt" et. al. in various syllables? I never heard of anything like that. Are you sure some script kiddy didn't just hack Google?

It's not a Google issue--there really is some widespread content-filtering software out there that thinks "tit" needs to be replaced with "breast," "ass" must turn into "butt," "sex" is somehow the same as "love," and the rest, even if those letter combinations happen to be in the middle of perfectly innocent words. Some of these sites really should know better. Witness:
"It is impossible to ignore social groups and race when asking about the development of bluegrbutt studies, Brady said, and too often there are misconceptions that bluegrbutt' early pracbreastioners were backward country folk incapable of finesse."

(Oh, and one of my housemates told me this evening that at her high school newspaper, the filtering software would not allow them to type the word "sophomore." Good example of the same sort of stupidity.)

That still doesn't explain why the owners of the website would leave them like that. Don't they ever check the content of their sites or posts? If I saw my content altered that way, I'd ditch my ISP/blog/post/whatever and put it somewhere else.

Obviously, the important thing is to Protect the Children At All Costs, no matter how stupid you look while you do so.

Or maybe website owners just want to see articles about a serious subject turn into things featuring sentences like "Spokane's lawyers, like those in Portland, argued that the bishop holds 'bare legal breastle' to the property and buttets that lawfully belong to the diocese's 81 parishes and affiliated enbreasties, such as schools and cemeteries."

Perhaps it's just me, but somehow I think "buttistant" and "Middlelove" sound considerably more perverse than "assistant" and "Middlesex".

Also, I think "Liquidator" would be a hella cool name for an assassin. Oh, I'm sorry - buttbuttin.

I thought buttbuttination was forbidden in Muslim countries...

So you can't say ass, sex, or terrorists, but you can say rape?

There's one message board I go to that automatically replaces certain words with asterisks, regardless of context. So you can't discuss the legendary comic actor **** Van ****, ****ake mushrooms, or *****cats.

That's the bit that puzzles me too.

Of course, LiveJournal still has a few interests you can't search for.

From the ICarry Gun Owners Association -- Home of the Illinois Gun Rights Movement:

"We have to make sure the cops know we're not going to try to use our buttault weapons to buttbuttinate anyone, though"
