My last post last night was very cheerful and optimistic, which optimism was a bit misplaced since I couldn't connect again at all after supper. I've taken the computer apart and put it back together again as securely as I know how (several times), and both connection speeds and sound volume are erratic and frequently pathetic. It seems that the thing that the modem and sound card are attached to hates me, or maybe the thing that it attaches to hates me. In any event, if you want to tell me anything, your best bet is to call the cell phone. I'm going to try to check my e-mail and friends page, but I may end up throwing computer parts out the window instead.

The modem and the sound card are not right next to each other, are they? I vaguely remember this causing interference in my old computer; I had to put them a space or two apart for everything to be hunky dorey.

Nope, there's a slot between the two. Unfortunately, as of about an hour ago, the computer didn't even recognize that the port the modem's in existed, much less that there was a usable modem there.
