Happy After-Christmas!

This is the first time I've been online since Christmas afternoon (my time), so I haven't read any of your post-holiday postings and can therefore still be hopeful that you all had wonderful days.

Christmas Eve: Almost watched the entirety of It's a Wonderful Life without falling asleep for the first time ever, but decided to miss out on the ending so I could go to the candlelight service at a local United Methodist Church. On the way there, I marveled at the insanity of the holiday drivers. People talk about how crazy the drivers are on New Year's Eve, but I've walked through the same neighborhood at the same time on both Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, and the Christmas Eve drivers are decidedly crazier. Still, the holiday lights were pretty and the tinny holiday music playing from plastic lawn ornaments was cheery in a tacky sort of way.

The candlelight service was surprisingly not crowded. At least this was a surprise to me, though maybe it shouldn't have been. When I was growing up, I got used to the idea of UM churches being packed on all Dec. 24 and Easter Sunday services, but that doesn't seem to be the case at this one. Maybe the crowds went to the early "family" service instead. In any event, the service was full of singing like all good Methodist services are and my throat was worn out by the time I got home, which meant you were all spared the voice post I had been thinking of doing with me singing holiday tunes. Consider yourselves very, very fortunate. On second thought, throw in a few more "very"s. Stayed at the church later than I can ever remember staying in a church (aside from youth group overnight things as a teenager), having fun looking at the decorations and chatting with the woman in charge of the cookies in the lobby. As I was nearly the last person to leave, she told me, "Please! Take as many cookies as you want!" I probably could have taken more home with me, but maybe it was just as well that I didn't.

Christmas Day: [livejournal.com profile] hasufin and [livejournal.com profile] stardansr invited me to spend the holiday with them, so I did! Well, because I'd gotten home so late the night before and after so much sleep-deprivation recently, I did get off to a slow start. And the cold rain coming down didn't help me move any faster. And then the Metrorail system seemed to be moving slowly too. But finally I did end up in a nice, warm house with the smell of drunken ham and the promise of weird conversation, which promise was well-kept. We watched Howl's Moving Castle for a while as [livejournal.com profile] hasufin cooked, which I quite enjoyed. The food was quite tasty, and with both of them assuring me that all my health problems keep me from being a good experimental test subject, I'll assume that my altered state all the next day was entirely unrelated to anything I ate. So anyway, that was lots of fun.

December 26: Have you ever noticed that the first interest listed on my userinfo page is "accidental mysticism"? Yeah, it was that kind of day. On the plus side, the library was open! I was in a good frame of mind for immersing myself in other worlds, so it was a great time for reading fantasy stories. However, walking around the neighborhood might not have been such a good idea, since it helps to be firmly in this world when you're crossing busy streets.

While I was out walking, a little boy with what looked like a little radar gun was measuring how fast cars and people and birds were moving. A young-faced, white-haired woman standing nearby told him, "Tell her how fast she's walking!" He pointed the thing at me. He kept pointing, a frown on his face. "I can't get her!" Maybe I wasn't really there after all.

Last night: Odd dreams involving dead people and lots of blood-colored smoke. I wonder what all that was about.

Today: More reading, with another trip to the library. Managed not to get run over by cars (barely). Welcomed returning housemates. Finally decided to get back online and see how you lot are doing. So, how are you?

GLad you enjoyed the food; it was touch and go with a few things there.

And no, I swear - I did not put any hallucinogens in ANY of the food. Not even the cranberry sauce.

More likely the boy could clock you because, being organic rather than metal, you don't reflect radio waves.

Oh, I believe you about the non-hallucinogenic food. Really. Even the cranberry sauce.

because, being organic rather than metal, you don't reflect radio waves.

Oh sure, be logical about it! The kid did seem surprised, though. Maybe everyone else he'd tried to follow was a cyborg. That's not really out of question in this area.
