My plans to do lots of things early this week were a bit overoptimistic.

Apparently, chomping down on pizza last week was the wrong approach. I should have gone for the chicken soup. Fortunately, I managed to drag myself out of bed and into the grocery store tonight, so I can cook myself some chicken & sweet potato soup in the morning with loads of kale and as much garlic as I can stand. With luck, I'll be able to do a few other things tomorrow while I'm at it. With less luck, I'll at least have chicken soup and plenty of reading material.

I am increasingly grateful for the ability to renew library books from the comfort of home.

Last night in dreams, I went to campus administration to cancel all my classes for the semester. My father was there annoying me immensely, but at least I had the good grace not to remind him that he's been dead for over a decade. In return, he was kind enough not to remind me I haven't attended university since the very early '90s.

Also in my dreams there was a cat, one of the slenderer breeds, with beautiful, deep green fur. I want one. I don't want to have to pay a mad geneticist to create one combining feline and broccoli DNA, but I still want one.

No problem on the cat - it'd be easier to use avian or reptilian DNA anyhow. I'm not, offhand, coming up with any green-furred mammals, but the start/stop codons are the same for anythign in Animalia... might be some pathway issues, though...

*blink* I do not think that was actually a request to add to your list of interesting projects.

True, this is supposed to be a no-pets household anyway. Then again, my dustbunnies have formed a thriving colony by now, so a green cat might not be noticed so much.

Awww!

Come on, you *liked* the idea for firebreathing cows!

To be honest, in my dream the cat was connected with lizards, so the reptilian DNA might be the way to go. But I was thinking after I woke up that if any animal could make good use of chlorophyll, it would be an animal who enjoyed basking in sunbeams anyway.

Mmm... tough call. Adding chloroplasts might well be easier than adding a pigment. I'm not sure if it's been done. No, I don't think it would be that easy - chloroplasts, like mitochondria, have evolved to exist in a very specific environment. I doubt it would work out well. Pigment route, definitely.

Odd, my first reaction to the thought of a green cat was "ooo, lovely!" Then "but it would be really hard on the birds."

There is a green monkey (a.k.a. vervet), but it's not very green. It looks sort of brownish olive in the right light. Although I don't think that's the green you want, and I for one wouldn't have a monkey/cat hybrid in my house, if I wanted the house to last more than six hours.

A monkey/cat hybrid sounds like a fun critter, though I admit it might not be the ideal housepet.

That soup sounds wonderful. Do you have a recipe for it?

I'm afraid there's no recipe involved, it's just a "throw together whatever sounds good at the time" deal. Should be tasty, though.
