Updatish

Last Wednesday: Went out to Open Study, which turned out to be Open Restaurant. Once the staff at the Thai place figured out where to put eight adults and two small children, we had a great meal (most of us) and fun conversation. It was much fun to meet the visitors & hang out with everybody.

Saturday: Was invited to hang out at Lyssa & the Doctor's apartment, where we all ate much of Lyssa's tasty food (cranberry chicken, cornbread dressing, broccoli--early Thanksgiving! with a smaller bird). Got to see Jarin for the first time in ages. We all went out to Whole Foods & selected loaves of gingerbread, fresh whipped cream, and fruit for dessert (pineapple for most, red raspberries for me). Sat around talking and watching the Cartoon Network till about one in the morning. Next time I know I'll be riding Metro home late on a Saturday night, I need to make sure I've got more than 30 pages left in the book I'm reading, because those long waits between trains can get awfully boring otherwise. Thanks to those long waits, I got home around 3:00 a.m. It was very much worth it, though.

Sunday: Day of rest. The big event of my day was the WB network's final night when they showed the pilot episodes of some of their biggest shows. It was great to see Buffy and Angel again, even for a little while. I miss Joss on my TV.

Monday: Spent lots of time on the phone trying to make doctors' appointments. Walked a total of about 3 miles, in spite of ongoing foot & ankle pain. Saw a spectacular sunset. Since that night's get-together was canceled, I was at home when the new Studio 60 came on and tuned into the last half hour. Though it's not something I'd plan my schedule around, it's certainly good enough to watch if I happen to be home when it's on. "I've already got a dual masturbation show in active development."

Tuesday: Rested and did many leg stretches to try to get my feet & ankles to stop screaming at me. Made some phone calls, one of them much pleasanter than I'd expected. Listened to some of the music I was given over the weekend.

All during the past week: Reading some of Lois McMaster Bujold's Miles Vorkosigan books (am nearing the end of The Vor Game now). Though I read Barrayar once when it was serialized in one of the SF magazines, I'd never actually read any of the books where Miles was a main character. It was a good time to remedy that. These books seem to be exactly what I need right now.

Isn't it, though? My old local friends have never had the decency to live near Metro stations, so I don't get to see them very often. It's great to know people who live in places I can get to! I can't always tolerate the long rides, but I've been pretty lucky with that for about the last month & a half.

The rest of this week I get to go out & about for medical appointments, which aren't so much fun. If I'm lucky there'll be more appointments later in the month--necessary but not so enjoyable either. Here's hoping the fun will resume soonish.

Yes! It's been too long since any Buffyverse reruns aired here. It's also been too long since I immersed myself in a fictional world for a while.

Somebody described Bujold once to me as literary mind candy. I prefer to call her the ideal bathtub companion :) She's just something seemingly so rare -- literary escapist fiction.

For me she's more of a subway companion, but I see your point.

Yes, that line did catch the attention.
