If you too dislike the navigation strip

Found in an answer by [livejournal.com profile] jennifer to this request on the support boards:
Thank you for your feedback. The "navigation strip" contains useful links that make navigating through LiveJournal easier, and was designed and implemented because data indicated that people had problems locating frequently-used links from individual journals. It's also designed to help make it easier to see if you're logged into LiveJournal from an individual journal, which was one of our most frequently-requested features.

Previously, the navigation strip was still being developed, and users were given a chance to opt into displaying it. Unfortunately, information on users who tried the navigation strip and decided they didn't like it wasn't stored, due to an error in recording user preferences. Because LiveJournal staff is now comfortable that the navigation strip is ready for production release, they turned it on for all accounts except for the ones that had actively dismissed the "Did you know" box about the navigation strip. I'm sorry that your preference to not display the navigation strip wasn't stored; this is a one-time situation, and it won't be turned on for your account again. You can control your viewing options, including whether or not the navigation strip is displayed, at http://www.livejournal.com/manage/settings/

The LJ Navigation Strip, which many people have rather strong feelings about, has been turned on by default for a lot of us who would prefer not to see it. Turning it off on my journal was easy enough, but a lot of people have been wondering why it got turned on in the first place, so I figured I'd post the explanation someone in Support has been giving.

By the way, if you don't actually *want* to force everyone visiting your journal to see the navigation strip, you can turn off that option at http://www.livejournal.com/manage/settings/ while still keeping the option to view it yourself.

I'm still not sure why anything about the navigation strip is an issue, is all. I like it, personally, although I do wish I could customize the colors to suite my LJ style. That would make it good, whereas right now it's just kind of handy but out of place.

Well, from my perspective, it's both unattractive and pointless, as well as being yet another thing that noticeably slows down the loading of other people's LJ pages. I wouldn't be bothered if I could turn it off using the ?style=mine feature, but that bit of fucntionality is broken at the moment.

Is it? Poop.. Well I tired off the options that shows it to anyone else, since it's more useful to me than it is to them, really. I don't personally notice a change in page loading, but we're on a cable line here..

I wouldn't say it's pointless, but it is fairly unattractive in that it isn't customizable to fit with my LJ style.

Yeah, I'm not sure how much of the slowness is because my connection is dial-up and how much is because my poor computer's already running more software than it likes to, but the nav strip does seem to slow things down a bit. Maybe it shouldn't bother me because I'm on dial-up anyway, but...

And there is, theoretically, the possibility that I wouldn't think it was any slower than a page w/out the strip if I actually thought the strip was worth using.

It is pretty pointless for someone like me who has already memorized the URL of every place they want to go, and has the typing skills to get there quickly. :-)

Nya, unfortunately, I think you may be a minority these days in actually memorizing and typing things out. And who knows, maybe the nav bar just ate that last little smidgen of memory your computer had, which made it cry. I can't say though, since I don't have dial-up to test the difference. (And to me, it wouldn't make much of a difference anyway, since using dial-up again would make me cry. I got stuck with it during the year+ I spent in NJ after living off the T1 lines at college in FL).

Hopefully, people will be kind enough to un-check the 'always on' option for other users, though personally I only check my own friends page anyway, and don't usually browse to other peoples' journals.

Well, it's not so much that I memorize things to type them out, but that as far as I can tell the nav strip doesn't get me anywhere that the typical links on a typical journal page won't take me just as easily.

though personally I only check my own friends page anyway, and don't usually browse to other peoples' journals

Same here, usually, but if someone has their journal set up so that the comments page displays in an S2 style, then the nav strip will show up there too.

Aa, that's true I guess..

And oh, well I used to actually memorize URls and type them in all the time. In fact, I still do. The only things I bookmark are things that I won't actually need on a regular basis, but want to check up on or be able to get back to some months from now randomly.

I like the navigation strip, but I'm happy to see I don't impose it on others.

I doubt I'd have a problem with it if it weren't for the fact that I'm using an old, slowish computer with a smaller monitor than most people prefer. As it is, the nav strip just takes up space on the screen without doing anything I don't already do without it, so I'm happier when the thing is not imposed on me.
