I want to know why there are no lines leading to S. America, and hardly any in Canada. That doesn't gel with my surfing experience.

Good question. Maybe there are links you can't see on the other side of the globe, linking from Australia to Chile or Argentina, though that wouldn't explain the lack of links to/from Venezuela, Brazil, and the rest.
