Where there's smoke, there's... smoke

A housemate and I were talking this evening about the smoky smell we'd both noticed earlier in the day. It wasn't the relatively pleasant scent of a woodfire or the odor of someone's backyard barbecue; and according to her, it wasn't localized to our immediate neighborhood. So of course I had to get online and see if I could find out where our nasty smoke was coming from.

If any of you who are remotely local to me happen to notice smoke this weekend: The fire is a bit farther away than you might expect.

In happier news: If you want to spend some time indoors in a (hopefully) smoke-free environment, Maryland's Tax-free shopping week begins tomorrow.

I know that smoke can travel long distances and be noticeable if the fire's big enough, but we don't tend to get wildfires that big anywhere near here (thousands of acres! a burning peat bog!). Yesterday the only smoke we could smell was local--anything else was washed away by the downpours we got!
