Outside my window: A tree with mixed green and red leaves, brown limbs and branches covered in white snow glittering gold in the sunlight, pale blue sky in the background. Breeze blowing both leaves and melting snow slantwise to the ground.
By the way: Anyone who likes these icons is free to take, use, and/or modify them. As long as this computer runs, I can always find more snowflakes. Congratulations to anyone who managed to make a decision in the poll! Man, I love kaleidoscopes.
Decisions one hates to make: It would be a very good idea to go and argue with some bureaucrats as soon as possible. But today I have this whole coughing, sneezing, aching, sore throat, clogged eustachian tube, etc. kind of ickiness going on. Any other year I'd have said, "Oh bother, it's just a cold," and gone on with whatever plans I had, making sure I brought plenty of tissues with me wherever I went. But after the last two winters, I'm a bit paranoid, thinking this cold will turn into an attack of neverending bronchitis with more of the sheer exhaustion, coughing up blood, keeping the neighbors awake that I had last year. So I pretty much decided to spend today at home, resting and away from other people who might infect me when I'm down. Not sure if this is the right decision, since I do have a crisis or two on my hands. Well, if I feel better tomorrow I'll know it was the right decision, and if I don't feel better I'll know it's time to fight for Medicaid before I end up in the ER again. Gah.
Chicken soup: Made a pot of the stuff yesterday, which may have been the first time I've made my own chicken soup and not relied on stuff from a can. Didn't follow any recipe, deciding instead to go with whatever happened to sound good when I was out yesterday. What sounded good ended up being a combination of chicken, red potato, sweet potato, kale, garlic, red bell pepper, salt, red pepper flakes, ground thyme, parsley flakes. I don't know if any of that will kill the cold, but it does taste good today.
LJ weirdness: They're hoping all the previously-blocked comment notifications will get mailed out quickly. It must be working--I've already gotten a notification of a comment made last January 7.

I also think that staying in was probably a wise idea. Fighting with bureaucrats is bad enough without feeling awful while doing it. A rest and some comfort food is good for you even apart from the nutrients in the soup. And that soup sounds good, mmm.

This year has been weird for all nature-related things. There's an Atlantic hurricane still raging in December, many trees in Maryland still have their leaves... it's madness! Or, y'know, a little unusual anyway.

Maybe, but I stayed home again today too. I really can't afford to sit around doing nothing tomorrow, even if that would be best for my body under other circumstances. It sucks to be sick.
