Sunday update

So yesterday at the library I decided to check out a few C.S. Lewis books and a few unrelated books, figuring I could decide later on which I wanted to begin reading first. I ended up reading Julia Scheeres' Jesus Land: A Memoir--all 355 pages of it. Ever since health problems forced me to drop out of school in '91, it has been rare for me to read more than 100 pages of anything in a day (heck, for a long time anything more than 10 pages was rare), so 355 pages is pretty amazing. Since I got to bed at about 3:30 in the morning and woke up about 4-and-a-half hours later, the fact that I remember what the book was about is even more amazing. I hadn't planned on going to bed that late, mind you, but my stressed-out brain refused to calm down enough to let me sleep.

Yeah, woke up at 8 a.m. because my body thought that was enough sleep for one morning. Silly body. Even getting out of bed then wasn't enough to let me get to anyone's eleven o'clock church service on time, as various internal organs didn't want to play nicely this morning. But the reason why I've actually made it to church more than once in the last month is that I finally gave up on the idea that I need to get to services on time, so I decided to find out if arriving at a United Methodist communion service forty-five minutes late would be too over-the-top. As it turns out, the service lasted another hour and fifteen minutes after I got there. I'd missed hearing the scripture readings (but I read them at home), some announcements, some message about World AIDS Day, and half a zillion ghastly hymns (whoever it is who picked out the music today clearly does not have the same taste in music that I do), so my timing wasn't so bad after all. I even managed to grab some cake in the conference room after the service before all my muscles really started to scream, though the cake didn't have anywhere near enough chocolate in it.

I think I should try to get some sleep soon, in case there's some chance of getting something done at social services before the snows come. But of course that all depends on how cooperative my body decides to be, as well as how cooperative the weather decides to be. Whether I get out to deal with the Bureaucracy Monster or not, I have the feeling that some or all of my remaining food stamps need to be spent on oranges, garlic, and chicken soup.

Hang on, you were really 45 minutes late and it went on for a further hour and 15. They have TWO hour services?? Man that must take some commitment, the average Catholic mass when I was a teen used to be about 45 in total, less if the priest rushed his sermon.

Anyways, regardless of my opinions I'm glad you managed to get there and take part (and get cake) if that's what you best wanted to do today.

Heh. This service was indeed insanely long. They have an earlier service (8:30, I think) which is a nice, reasonable length at an unreasonably early hour. For some reason, United Methodist churches' later services are often quite long if it's a communion Sunday (many churches in the denomination have communion just once a month, on the first Sunday). But two hours is well, insanely long, a bit longer than I was expecting.
