Update

Migraine pretty much went away, finally. On Sunday I was even able to go dump books in the library drop-off, go to church (ten minutes late, which was about twenty minutes earlier than I would have liked (they were playing too much music from the 1880s, not my favorite decade)), escape my parentheses (oh wait, that was today), come home for lunch & some rest, go to the library again, grab some food at the supermarket, and come home. Aside from nearly passing out in church, this worked out well for me.

Monday: Tired. Read library books. Never left the house. Barely left my room.

Today: Wanted to get out of the house early enough to do a few things what need doing, but my body had other plans. Finally went to the grocery store again this evening so I could get the chance to dodge shopping carts and cranky customers in the bread aisle. Had fun conversations with the other folks in line. Now it's time for me to decide whether supper should be liver & onions or French toast. (No, I am not combining the two. Not this time.)

So, what's everybody doing for Thanksgiving? I've got no plans as of yet. I've got the makings for French toast, though, so I can be thankful for that.

French toast for Thanksgiving sounds good! We'll be small, just my husband and me and our 25 year old son who will join us from his home fifty miles away. Dense fog is with us (airport out of commission) so I hope his drive will be safe. My husband does the turkey thank goodness, as I was a vegetarian too long to feel comfortable with that part of it. Meanwhile we'll be wondering and eager to hear from our daughter who's having the day with her grandmother in California (where she goes to college) and has her boyfriend along... I hope your day is peaceful and sweet. That's what I always hope for ours too.

I'm going to my sister-in-law's house. I should more properly call her my ex-sister-in-law, since she and my brother are now divorced, but she's still the mother of my eldest niece and nephew and I didn't divorce her, dammit.

So, off to her house, to which she's invited all of her single friends with nowhere else to go this year. It will be a bunch of women, some kids, lots of food and plenty of booze. I think it will be fun. Take care of yourself.

So you got the comment after all? Good--with LJ glitches, i wondered. (Of 3 comments to this post so far, yours is the only one I got the notification for.) I just don't like to make comments in public posts that refer to locked posts, even if other people have done it first.

Napping sounds like a good way to spend the day. And macaroni is a perfectly good Thanksgiving food. Sleep well! :-)

Small Thanksgivings can be good, as long as everybody's safe. Yes, I hope yours is peaceful and sweet too! Will you be eating any special foods besides the turkey?

I didn't divorce her, dammit.

That's the spirit!

Food, booze, and good people? Sounds like you all will have a good Thanksgiving! You take good care of yourself too.

Oh, and I never did respond to your last e-mail... months ago. Gah. I kinda need to do that soonish, don't I?

We've got a turkey belly that we're going to stick in the crock pot with some onion and herbs. I think we've got some instant taters somewhere, and we've got some dressing mix, plus some dressing from the family event, and some of the cranberry goop. Secret of the day? The cranberry mixture goes really very well with a dollop of vanilla ice cream.

The day will probably involve getting a fire going, and buying a bag of trail mix or candy, and sitting in front of the TV eating it while watching whatever movies happen to be on. I'm going to see about getting some kind of alcohol, too, possibly. Meanwhile, the turkey will be cooking, and at some point we'll "cook" the trimmings, serve it all, and most likely go back in front of the TV.

I've got pancake mix, so I might make a few for breakfast, come to think of it. Yeah. Pancakes and sausage, and coffee.

Supper will undoubtedly be leftover sandwiches.

I can't think of anything else we've really got to do for the day. I'm not a great football fan, and parades are kinda paradey. The family stuff is out of the way already.

So, shopping list: candy, half and half, possibly some brandy, possibly some instant taters. Better check the health of that onion in the fridge, too...

We're having 16 people over for a huge meal including chips with a mexican style layered dip, more chips with that onion dip stuff, stuffed mushrooms, a big turkey, a ham, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, some form of sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce (starting from cranberries!), apple salad, green bean casserole, pea salad, kibbe, tabouleh, possibly other Lebanese goodies, pumpkin pie, banana pudding, and baklava! ::whew:: I'm not making all of that, thank goodness. That is what myself, my mother, my meemaw, my mother-in-law and my aunt are making. ^_^

Your quiet french toast Thanksgiving sounds nice! I would definitely choose the french toast over the liver and onions though.

I did cranberries from scratch, too! It was my first time.

I posted the recipe, if you're curious. I'd maybe go a little lighter on the orange juice. They're tasty enough, but they're pretty damn far from a can of cranberry jelly, so might surprise a few people.

Um, Darth, are you sure it's not a turkey "breast"?

My new Thanksgiving Day tradition appears to be . . . working.

Considering all the options for things you could be doing on Thanksgiving... that's actually not a bad one. Here's hoping you have a good day with no noticeable pain, fun with coworkers, maybe even some cranberry sauce when you get a break.

Oh yes. My family likes to do some interesting things with cranberries--things involving nuts and alcohol and other stuff Ocean Spray won't put in a can. Other people make cranberry relish with horseradish or onions(!), which can be quite tasty as long as you're not expecting a simple jelly.

Lebanese Thanksgiving with Mexican appetizers! That sounds like a great meal. :-) Sixteen people gathered together sounds like a good time, as long as you all get along pretty well. Oh, and cranberry sauce from scratch is yummy.

I would definitely choose the french toast over the liver and onions though.

Last night I ate the last of the liver, so there will be none of that on Thanksgiving. Okay, in theory I could go to the store today to buy some more, but the store was too crowded yesterday (I really am surprised I don't have bruises from people bumping into me when I was trying to get some bread).

As [livejournal.com profile] fearthainnlent wondered: turkey belly??

Secret of the day? The cranberry mixture goes really very well with a dollop of vanilla ice cream.

Out family's cranberry sauces usually make good pumpkin pie toppings.

So, shopping list:

You're going shopping today? Grocery shopping the day before Thanksgiving? Wow. I wish you luck!

[identity profile] darth-spacey.livejournal.com 2005-11-23 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
AFAICT, "belly" for "breast" is a regional thing, possibly because "breast" is such a filthy, dirty, disgusting word.

As for the shopping, K-Mart is just down the street, and all I need are a couple of things. The street is not a major national artery, so I think I'll be able to take it. The things to pick up are few enough that I ought to be able to pop in and pop out, and get in the 10 items or less lane. I'm a rather laid back and groovy shopper, when I want to be, and tend to be able to glide through the chaos. It's not like I'm going toy shopping Friday, after all.

[identity profile] darth-spacey.livejournal.com 2005-11-23 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, "belly" seems to be something of a euphemism among the simple but deeply religious country folk that make up a lot of my in-laws. Both sides of my wife's family are of good, solid farming stock -- Mary from Missouri and Jesse from right here in North Carolina.

[identity profile] coffeegrace.livejournal.com 2005-11-24 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh neat! The recipe I have (which was on the bag) doesn't call for any oranges or lemons. I don't have any lemons and can't get to the store in time now :-(. But I do have plenty of oranges so I think I'll throw some in there! Thanks for the recipe! :-)

Lebanese Thanksgiving with Mexican appetizers! That sounds like a great meal.
I like to be multi-cultural, especially when it comes to food! And, don't forget the good 'ol down home southern cooking (My father's side is from Alabama). :-D

Sixteen people gathered together sounds like a good time, as long as you all get along pretty well.
We get along very well, so it should be a great time. Last Thanksgiving (after the meal) we ended up all singing, playing instruments (some "instruments" were pots and pans) and dancing the dance of the Goofy People. I have a silly family.
