hummingwolf: Drawing of a creature that is part-wolf, part-hummingbird. (Hummingwolf by Dandelion)

Oh dearie

Pretend for a moment that I have something deep and meaningful to say here. Thank you.

Today, spent some time reading books, some time reading online, a little time attempting to nap, a reasonable amount of time finding cute squashes and onions at the supermarket, less time doing laundry than I would have liked, and some happy time watching Bones (not a great show, but it didn't make me feel like hurling the TV set out the window) and House, M.D. (a great show).

The thought taking over my brain tonight is: Weather Porn. You see, back when Katrina was approaching land, [livejournal.com profile] daisydumont used the term "weather porn" in reference to the lurid details voyeuristic reporters dilate upon when some great storm is preparing to ravish the land. This discussion taking place before we knew the full extent of Kat's damage, it was more amusing to me then than it is now to think about weather-related fanfic all about the torrid relationship between the hurricane and the Gulf of Mexico. Anyway, I was reminded of the weather porn concept again today when I looked at Weather Underground's current tropical weather page and saw the name of this storm. If you do not know why that name triggers thoughts of weather porn, you have probably never been an English-speaking teenager.

Yes, please pretend I had something deep and meaningful to say here.

So, how is it watching a non-Angel David Boreanaz?

It's... not a major thrill, honestly. So far, both lead characters strike me as blandly pretty faces with blandly pretty personalities. It could get more interesting. I hope it does, before FOX cancels it (though I'm sure FOX will cancel it anyway).

Wasn't Longwang the guy in Sixteen Candles?

No wait, that was Long Dong.

Long Duk Dong? I fell asleep during that movie, so I don't remember too well.

This is why it's good to have you here. Thanks for a laugh. :-)

Hah! I didn't even notice the shape of the track, since it's pretty typical. But you're right--when you add a name like that, hurricane tracks take on a whole new significance. (The shape has changed since your comment, but I'm pretty sure of what you meant!)

Hey, are you okay out there?

[identity profile] daisydumont.livejournal.com 2005-09-28 11:09 am (UTC)(link)
the weather channel's "storm stories" is what triggered my loathing for weather porn. it's the meteorological equivalent of those videotapes they used to sell of people dying in car crashes and stuff. yuck.

Ah, it's been a long time since I lived in a house with cable. Something of a "Wild Hurricanes Attack!" idea, I take it.

oh yeah, every night at 8:00 for an hour, they have these Storm Stories on the weather channel: people giving their tales of horror, with footage of tornadoes and so on. i can't bear it. until my knee went out and my conditioning suffered, i was on the treadmill most evenings right around then and would have to turn to Emeril on the food channel to avoid the porn!

Oh...my gosh. Terrific!

And the graphic of the storm track kinda resembles a sperm.

Way too much free time on my hands, today :)

You think *you* had too much free time on your hands? I was the one thinking about weather porn last night. ;-)

Thank you! This drawing was made for me by [livejournal.com profile] hai_kah_uhk. She and her husband also have a cool comic: Zephyr & Reginald: Minions for Hire.

I've tried making my own version of a hummingwolf (with a program called POV-Ray), but mine probably is closer to a stuffed toy fox with wings than a wolf. At least you can identify the general areas of the animal kingdom involved. ;-)
