In the news: Forged Documents Change History. Interesting to read the comments there.

Here on LJ, this Existential Flame War can be fun.

I felt physically better today, managing to get out of the house and walk a little bit. From one of the neighborhood houses, a woman's voice could be heard yelling at a son or perhaps a family pet. "Stop that right now, L.J.!" I giggled softly.

In a link brought to our attention by [livejournal.com profile] daisydumont, we have predictions about the new Harry Potter novel. I realize that most people won't believe any of these, but I find this one entirely plausible: "Hermione perfects the iSpell, a handheld device that can hold thousands of charms and curses while keeping the bearer both magically protected and incredibly trendy." In terribly important news also related to Harry Potter, it has been revealed that an author who's criticized Rowling's novels says the new pope wrote letters agreeing with her a couple of years ago. The Pope himself is unavailable for comment. Well, it's all more interesting than all that stuff in the news about Karl Rove, right?

On a personal note: After wishing for so long that I could have dreams that don't involve grocery shopping, last night I had a dream involving faeries and Donald Trump. Even in the dream world, no-one had a good explanation for The Donald's hair.

me, i'm most impressed by the revelation that the half-blood prince is lord voldemort's younger brother skippy. that i can just see. :D

the existential flame war went right over my head. philosophy has never been my forte (but i recognized several names from when i was in the HP fandom).

Well, the existential flame war isn't so much philosophy as procedure, I think. The fun is coming up with a new flame without actually flaming anybody. I liked the bit where I got to claim to be Odin. :-)

its a terrible thing to say but I dont like the harry potter
books at all, but having said it does it mean I will be the
next Pope and this old email dug up? But to you and Vicki and
all my friends who take pleasure in them I can say that I
surely cant claim to be one up on you all there because I
have also confessed to liking the modesty blaise thrillers of
peter o donnel which perhaps not every clergyman has an
enthusaism for.

Oh, I don't think it's so terrible to say you don't like Harry Potter. Many people think Rowling's books are rubbish. I did enjoy the books, but not so much that I'll be crushed if I can't borrow the new one from the library within the next three months.

One of these days I'll have to try the Modesty Blaise books! Right now there are too many other books I'd like to read or re-read, but their time will come one day.

I saw! There's no way I'll be reading every comment on that post, but it's fun to dip in randomly and see what's been going on.

The Existential Flame War is hilarious....although I admittedly didn't read the *entire* comment thread.

;)

What? You haven't bothered to read a thread that's only a bit over 800 comments now? Hmph.

You do realise *all* history is fake, right? The National Archives has a staff of thousands of writers, carefully adjusting the past to meet the requirements of the present. Right? Right???

You posted that comment as an excuse to the use the tinfoil hat icon, didn't you?

[identity profile] darth-spacey.livejournal.com 2005-07-16 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Somewhat, yeah. The comment would have existed without the icon, I think. I certainly composed the first sentence before I realised "Hey, I could use my new icon!" and things just went downhill from there.

So, Pope Palpatine the First is upset about the Harry Potter books? Well, isn't that precious.

It's a classic, considering he's not upset about AIDS or overpopulation or something else that actually matters.

[identity profile] hummingwolf.livejournal.com 2005-07-16 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Well, there's no reason to believe he's still upset about them, or even a certainty that he ever was. I take that author's claim of having real letters with a grain of salt.

But it's summer. I'm adding salt to everything.

It's not so much an Existential Flame War, as a Goedel Flame War. Or maybe a Meta-Goedel Flame War.

Forever incomplete.

Did your dream include a cheap "You're Fired" line?

[identity profile] hummingwolf.livejournal.com 2005-07-16 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
No line about being fired. I didn't have any money in the dream, either, and he was giving me a tour of some property anyway. He's such an odd man.
