So last Friday I was quite cranky because all the bureaucratic nonsense continued to be nonsensical and it looked as if I might even have to reapply for food stamps all over again because person or persons unknown had misplaced any record of my having done all the things I did. Went to the grocery store that evening with the vague hope that maybe someone had straightened things out without telling me and I'd have food stamp credit again, but of course that was mere wishful thinking.
Spent Saturday & Sunday resting, pretty much. Never left the house either day. (In the heat, I spent much of the weekend wishing I could go buy ice cream. It has very very definitely been ice-cream-weather.) The plan was to go into social services early yesterday morning with all my paperwork and evidence that I'd already given them my paperwork. Then I woke up too early in the overheated morning and proceeded to have one of those days where getting much of anything done was a triumph, so I congratulated myself when I got the fresh laundry sorted and planned to go deal with the food stamp situation this morning. In the evening, went to a supermarket to pick up some prescriptions and buy some cheese with my few remaining food stamp dollars...
See the icon accompanying this post? That's the face of someone who, on getting her receipt back in the grocery line, discovered that somebody actually did their job. That's the face of somebody who can go to the store today for fresh vegetables and fruits, orange juice, olive oil, high-fiber cereal--and ice cream.
(My parents said that my face pretty much looked like that the first time I ever tried ice cream. For all I know, that could have been right before this photo was taken.)
Now I get to decide which (non-bureaucratic!) air-conditioned place to spend the day in. With a weather forecast like this:
...HEAT ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM EDT THIS EVENING...
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN STERLING VIRGINIA IS CONTINUING THE HEAT ADVISORY...WHICH IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM EDT THIS EVENING.
TEMPERATURES IN THE 90S COMBINED WITH HIGH HUMIDITY WILL PRODUCE EVEN WARMER CONDITIONS THAN YESTERDAY. HEAT INDEX VALUES WERE IN THE MID TO UPPER 90S YESTERDAY...THEY WILL NEAR 100 THIS AFTERNOON.
A HEAT ADVISORY MEANS THAT A PERIOD OF HOT TEMPERATURES IS EXPECTED. THE COMBINATION OF HOT TEMPERATURES AND HIGH HUMIDITY WILL COMBINE TO CREATE A SITUATION IN WHICH HEAT ILLNESSES ARE POSSIBLE. DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS...STAY IN AN AIR-CONDITIONED ROOM...STAY OUT OF THE SUN...AND CHECK UP ON RELATIVES AND NEIGHBORS.
I'm thinking this is a good day to hang out at the public library.

What did you read at the library?

Un asks the important questions. Actually, I pretty much just lounged around looking at magazines, trying to get in positions where I wouldn't pass out without looking to the librarians like someone who needed to get kicked out of the library.

The security cops at the Glendale library used to like to hassle people, and kept trying to kick me out for various reasons, usually sitting with my legs crossed in the chairs. Apparently it upset them that I didn't have both legs on the floor.
Eventually I had to tell one of the rent a dopes that I was an attorney and would happily sue his company and the city for harrasement, and then ask all the homeless folk they like to pick on if they wanted to start a class action law suit. Never had any trouble after that.

::smiles big with you::
I don't really like ice cream (I know,it's weird), so I'll just leave it all for you. :-)
Do your best to stay cool today.
