(no subject)

This has been one of those weeks where thoughts go skipping across my mind, creating transitory ripples, sometimes with briefly-glimpsed interference patterns, then the thoughts disappear in the reeds of some unknown shore and it's as if they never were here.

Been too tired for sustained focus, in other words--or much of anything else, really. Rib pain (leftover from the bronchitis (yes, that infection which died back in March)) making me more tired, or perhaps the fatigue making me more aware of the pain. Still managing to walk most days, so things could be worse.

Spent much of the last few days listening to various fan stations on Launchcast. Why do my fellow Loreena McKennitt fans have a fondness for Enya, Minion of Satan? Oh sure, they both make atmospheric, vaguely-Celtic music with bits of other things thrown in; but Loreena McKennitt is actually good, while Enya exemplifies the banality of evil. I don't get it. Now listening to the Icehouse fan station, which is so far playing pretty much the '80s acts you'd expect (Ultravox, Crowded House, O.M.D., Icicle Works) as well as the amazing Iva Davies, man with the Most Gorgeous Voice Ever. I'm wishing the station played more Icehouse; but since I've got most of their albums on CD and can hear them in high-quality sound any time I want, that's a silly thing to complain about. One of these days my musical mood will move into the 21st century, I swear.

Returned a bunch of library books this week that I never managed to slog through, in spite of interesting subject matter. (See the bit above about ideas skipping and disappearing.) Limited myself to borrowing three books this time, rather than giving in to the impulse to check out seventy zillion all at once. I've been meaning to read Fritjof Capra's The Tao of Physics for aeons now, so it's good that I finally picked it up. Physics and Taoism--two great tastes that taste great together! Also got a slim volume on Esther and Ruth in the unfortunately-acronymed Interpretation Bible Studies series, since the series' authors tend to take the Bible seriously (from a Protestant perspective) without being fundamentalist about it. And the third book is Color Codes by Charles A. Riley II, "Modern Theories of Color in Philosophy, Painting and Architecture, Literature, Music, and Psychology." I've been thinking about color a lot lately and, on a shallow level, hoping that reading about color will help me come up with new ideas for fractals & such.

In a little while, I'll drag myself away from Launchcast to watch the midnight Buffy rerun of "Gingerbread." After that, here's hoping sleep is my friend tonight.

I hate to admit it, but there are a couple of Enya songs I'd probably like if they weren't by Enya. It's more fun to forget about those and just refer to her as Enya, Minion of Satan. :-) (For the record, I suspect that Satan is Celine Dion.)

The Tao of Physics is something like 30 years old by now. I've seen references to it for years & years--apparently it's a book about the parallels between Eastern philosophy & modern physics written by someone who actually knows about both topics and isn't just spouting off nonsense. I hope I can focus on reading it before it's due back at the library, because it's exactly the kind of thing I love to read!

The Icicle Works song I heard last night was, predictably, "Birds Fly (Whisper to a Scream)." "When it all Comes Down" sounds familiar, but I can't remember it right now. I'm having fun listening to this fan station right now, being reminded of a bunch of songs I'd forgotten about. (I don't think I needed to be reminded of quite so many Outfield songs, though.)

i don't remember Outfield. hmmm. i winmx-ed just now and saw the song you mention (which is a good one), but not the one i want. yahoo launch had a bio, though, that told me they were english, not from new zealand. WHFS used to play the BEST stuff. *sigh*

Yeah, this is why I'm addicted to Launchcast. I mean, where else am I gonna hear this stuff nowadays? (Ooh, Icehouse fans must really love Ultravox. "Dancing with Tears in my Eyes...")

i bought that ultravox album on vinyl, in fact. their lead singer (i'll remember the name.... midge ure!) had a great voice.
