UWARNING
HUMMINGWOLF'S JOURNAL WILL CONTAIN FREQUENT REFERENCES TO CICADAS UNTIL SUCH TIME AS THE BUGS DECIDE TO STOP MAKING NOISES AT TWO IN THE BLOODY MORNING.

Hey, does anybody know where I can find some good periodical cicada fanfic? Surely there must be some Buffy/Brood X crossover fic by now.

I really shouldn't blame the poor cicadas for my loss of sleep, really. At night they're not so bad as long as they don't get stuck in the windows. My main difficulty with sleeping ATM is that it's so hot in here! Here's hoping it cools off soon, since I still can't afford air conditioning.

Oh, ouch. I hate hot nights. I'd much rather be freezing; at least you can put on all the clothes & blankets you own!

So sorry about the court thing, lady. :(

Fuckwits.

I don't recall them ever keeping me awake.. they were here some 12 or 13 years back in huge numbers. But I had central air at the time and windows were closed.

Course this time I have no air and windows may be open but the 3 fans in my bedroom should pretty much drown them out anyway.

As a kid, we heard that noise rising and falling in the evenings too- I never saw them but I guess they must have been in the trees. California had them yearly, I think- they are on many different cycles. So I actually find the noise familiar and, dare I say: soothing somehow.

Yeah- weird.

That's not weird at all--the sound of annual cicadas is a lovely, summery sound I enjoy too. It's a bit different with these 17-year cicadas. These guys so numerous that they've been piling up on sidewalks in some places, and as far as I can tell, cicadas in these numbers can be heard from a distance simply if they're all flapping their wings and not even deliberately making noise at all. Of course in the daytime, the little guys do make as much noise as they possibly can in order to attract mates, so that many people are investing in earplugs to keep themselves from losing their hearing when they go outside.

I still like the sounds cicadas make, actually. Well, I'm less fond of some than others. Until this year, I had never realized that sometimes cicadas scream.

I'll let ya know then! Have you heard any cicadas screaming yet? Those sounds would be pretty believable as the sounds of demons attacking Buffy, really.

[identity profile] daisydumont.livejournal.com 2004-05-25 01:23 pm (UTC)(link)
oh, for sure! i was telling gerry just yesterday that the sound reminds me strongly of scary 1950s cold war anxiety horror movies i saw as a kid. that insect screaming noise was prominent in a specific film i saw but can't remember the name of. had peter graves in it, and huge irradiated grasshoppers. brrrr.

ok, here we go! pretty scary, huh kids?

Eeek! Yeah, the screaming noise does have a certain B-grade horror quality to it. fortunately the bugs haven't been irradiated so much that they grow to break the windows, 'cos I'm seeing another one crawling around between the screen & the storm window right now. Silly cicadas!

The plot would be simple enough... something like this:

Cicada attack is reported to Buffy.

Buffy goes to investigate, fights Cicada, one gets away. Xander sustains slight sprained eardrum from Cicada-noise based sounds.

Buffy falls for Cicada on moonlit night. Giles disapproves.

Cicada gets very happy, but ultimately tries to take over the Hellmouth.

Buffy has to step on Cicada to prevent plan. She has tears in her eyes while she's doing the stomping.

Heh. So are you saying that it's likely Buffy would relive S2, or are you saying that it's likely that fanfic writers would relive S2?

I must say, it's very odd to see you up and posting comments so early in the morning. This is gonna take some getting used to.
