Aliens Attack!

Two days ago, I noticed clumps of alien-looking shells on tall grass in some parts of the neighborhood. Yesterday, there were weird, squishy black-and-orange bodies on the sidewalks. In the evening I heard a sound which could have been the sound of a sprinkler or other periodic, innocent mechanism--or it could have been an inhuman mating cry. Today, there is definitely an odd, almost electronic tune heard throughout the city.

Ladies and gentlemen, the Invaders of Brood X have arrived.

At least I'm not the only one who isn't always sure whether I'm hearing cicada or machine. I think one of the bugs I heard on my walk today was trying to get a date with a noisy malfunctioning streetlight. Maybe the new generation of cicadas should try online personals instead.

I wouldn't recommend it. He's more likely to wind up with a date from another lonely street lamp on online personals than a willing Brood Xian. They're just not that effective.

When I first read your comment, I read "Xian" as the common shorthand for "Christian" and wondered for a moment if yet another apocalyptic sect is doing their best to make my whole religion look crazy. And then I realized that if a new religious cult does appear whose worship centers around the cicada invasion, I will not be in the least tiny little bit surprised.

I did consider personal ads in newspapers instead (I know people who've met and had long-term relationships that way), but I'm having trouble imagining a cicada who could lift a heavy newspaper or even turn the pages. Maybe a bunch of bugs working together could do it...

Cicadas are so cool. I just wish I had shoes that weren't falling apart--am dreading the day when I go for a walk and end up with squished cicada between my left sock and left insole. ::shudder::

Remind me to give you a copy of "Alien Attack" by S.P.O.C.K.

Very catchy song.

I hate those crappy bugs. They're slow and loud. At least they have a satisfying crunch. :)

You replied to something I posted in [livejournal.com profile] shadesong's journal, so here I am, all checking out your journal and whatever. :)

Hi there! I like the cicadas myself, but they do get to be a bit much when there are so many of them around.
