Why did I consider buying pork ears at the grocery store today? I don't need a silk purse. Oh, I know what you're all thinking. You're thinking, "But you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear." I'm sure that's why they sell at least three pork ears per package--you need more than one ear per purse.

Seeing packaged pig ears can make even a committed omnivore think there are some body parts that simply should not be removed from the animal who grew them. And then, if you're me, it makes you wonder if one of those ears belonged to Pigcent van Gogh.

In other news, a black cat crossed my path this evening--twice. I believe black cats bring good luck and would have invited this one into the house if allowed to do so. The cat looked very much at home sitting on our front porch. I wonder what it would have done if presented with a pork ear.

the other day at the food lion, i saw *tripe*. not something you see too often. i wonder if they carry it because it's an ingredient in menudo. the food lion has a large import section that includes Goya products and bagged central american spices. hmmmm. but pigs' ears, yuck!

Tripe is an ingredient in a boy band from the '80s? I never knew!

The local Safeway's getting better at carrying a variety of international foods too, though the selection's not nearly as good as, say, a gourmet Giant. I'm still itching to buy some food at that Thai grocery near my doctor's office, but maybe I ought to wait till I've eaten most of the fresh foods I've splurged on this week (pomegranates, persimmons, and pears--oh, my!).

but pigs' ears, yuck

Yeah, it did leave me wondering what the heck one does with those. I'm not sure I want to know.

Pigs ears are for dogs. Dried, or cooked.

That may be the best use for pork ears, but these were clearly for human consumption. From a bit of searching last night for recipes, it looks like pork ears are one of those foods that slaves made into meals because the white men didn't want to eat them, and then those foods remained traditional for an ethnic group generations later. I think that, as with chitterlings, I'll leave the pork ear preparation to people who know what they're doing.

Hmmm, none of my African American friends have ever mentioned pigs ears to me.

I wonder if I am missing out?

I didn't say it was African-American slaves. In the case of pork ears, the first recipes I found were Brazilian.

[identity profile] unwilly.livejournal.com 2003-12-27 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
That makes more sense, as the latin cuisines are heavily pork dominated.

And I realize now that I wasn't clear that I meant more than one ethnic group when I made the earlier comment. Sorry about that. Anyway, I'm not entirely sure which groups use pork ears in recipes; but if I found Brazilian recipes last night, there are probably ear recipes from other parts of Latin America as well--and Latin Americans make up a large portion of the local population where I live. So no, these ears probably weren't meant for dogs.

Oh, and Bulgarian pork ears too! No recipe, just a description from here:

"Kojlyuvski hotch-potch - Kojlyuvski hotch-potch is cooked from tender ribs, pork tongue and boiled pork ears. A lot of vegetables are added - tomatoes, courgettes, eggplant, carrots and onions. The recipe is a unique one - created by the inhabitants of the village of Kojlyuvtsi in the region of the Elena Balkan."

And I've seen references to pork ears being used in Asian cuisine, though no recipes there either.

I'm still leaving pork ear preparation to the experts. I'm not sure I could fix ears up without thinking of Pigcent van Gogh.

I forgot to laugh at the Pigcent joke earlier.

Bweheheheheh!

Nope, no dog here. Just a crazed hummingwolf who's having a little too much fun thinking about all the fresh food she can buy now!

LOL

I saw pork ears at the store again last night. I continued not buying them.

Is this the place to ask how your diet is going?

::g:: Sure!

Bad. I stuck to it really really well for weeks, then fell off the wagon over Christmas (with a HUGE thump on the cobblestones) and have been struggling ever since. I can manage most of the day, but I have to have something *nice* between 5pm and 10pm.

I guess the best way to manage would be to go to bed earlier, huh.

::hugs::

I want your snail mail address, btw, please! mfhenderson@hotmail.com

Agh, sorry to hear about the diet difficulties. Christmas isn't a good time for dieting, though where you are you at least have the advantage of not being cold this time of year. My body keeps telling me to put on more insulation, and with Mint M&Ms around... well, if I were on a diet I wouldn't be doing too well on the diet.

Snail mail address sent. So, are you gonna be my new stalker? ;-)

Ooh, ooh, yes please! I wanna be the new stalker! ::g::

Enh, diet stuff sucks, but it's only of my own stupid doing.

Mint M&Ms sound so nice. But I'm having a hard enough time resisting the new double chocolate Heaven icecreams!
