Today's excitement

It's probably exciting only to me, but today I went to the extra, bonus farmer's market--the one farmer who shows up to the place where the regular farmers' market is held after the season has ended. He's not planning to show up on any other Thursdays until next market season's official beginning, so I'm glad I got there today while he still had greens and root vegetables and apples to sell. Today's purchase: broccoli rabe, golden beets, and Cameo apples. None of the apple varieties available today were among my favorites; but since they're relatively locally-grown, fresh, and organic, I figured they had to be tastier than anything the local supermarket's got on the shelf. The apples are very crunchy and sweet, and the broccoli rabe is surprisingly sweet (for broccoli rabe). If all goes well tomorrow I'll find out if the beets are sweet too.

Was amused when the farmer handed a twenty to the market manager and asked him to go buy them some beer. I didn't stay at the market long because it's been one of those days when I could fall asleep crossing a busy road if I'm not careful. I look forward to the next market anyway.

Here's hoping I can stay conscious more consistently tomorrow. I have things to do, darn it! At the very least, I need to return some things to the library. If I'm lucky, maybe I can find some good chocolate somewhere.

I'm falling asleep now. I have no idea how much of what I've written here makes any sense at all. Why haven't I finished this entry yet? Oh, maybe I have.

what did you do with the broccoli rabe? i only had it once, in an italian restaurant down in DC (ridiculously expensive), and found it very peppery.

My answer to "What did you do with that vegetable?" is usually "I stir fried it with some other vegetables and some meat/egg/tofu/other protein source." I'm not a terribly interesting cook, I'm afraid.
