T.G.I... something
Friday, June 24th, 2011 09:06 pmShould I be thankful it's Friday? Actually, there's a local farm called Thank God It's Fresh; and since I did buy some cherry tomatoes from them yesterday, I can be thankful for those. For those interested in local produce: All of the Big Three crops that are farmers' market favorites--tomatoes, sweet corn, and peaches--have been spotted at a local market this week, though you probably shouldn't expect too much of any of those for another week or two. Blackberries are coming in, too, which makes me happy.
So yes, I did make it to the farmers' market yesterday, but I had some trouble doing it and I didn't stay as long as usual. For whatever reason, my migraine went away and was replaced by intense pain and weakness in my thighs while the fatigue lingered on. Still, while I was there I managed to have some fun chatting a bit, trying to be helpful when someone needed it, passing along messages from one vendor to another, and buying the tomatoes and berries that were calling my name. One of the farmers tried to talk me into going into DC to the USDA market today--but since I'd already seen her at two markets this week, I told her she'd gotten enough money from me! What I didn't tell her is that I'm somewhat more reluctant to take Metrorail downtown this time of year, especially after the latest fare increases. You see, every time I think about the money I'm spending on transportation, I can't help thinking in terms of how many boxes of fresh summer fruit I will now not be able to spend that cash on!
One thing I love about the market is that it gives me such a great opportunity to see people with completely different styles of interaction trying to communicate with each other. And sometimes it's the people who think of themselves as (or at least present themselves as) just regular, normal folks who inspire the most intense WTF? reactions in those around them. I'm certain that I inspire my fair share of confusion, but mostly people seem to like having me around. This is a good thing.
You know, in spite of high Metro fares and health problems, I really need to get out more.
