If anyone deserved the death penalty, he did. When I heard the news this morning, I cheered. Of course it isn't fair that he suffered so little compared to so many elsewhere in the world who were brutalized and tortured before they died. But in this world, we grab whatever semblance of justice we can get. Still, somehow, the death of anyone, even a one as repugnant as that one, takes on a different coloration when the song running through your head is "We Are All Connected" (video).

I am a Christian. As much as some of my fellow Christians might tempt me to deny it, I am a Christian. We Christians recently celebrated our holiest festival of the year, honoring the resurrection of the incarnate God who was executed after being declared guilty of wanting to reign over people who would rather be ruled by a Caesar. The switch from celebrating the living Lord who died that Death itself might be defeated to celebrating the killing of a murderer induces a kind of spiritual whiplash I don't know how to deal with. But cognitive dissonance is a vital part of the human experience, so I suppose I'll get used to it eventually.

"We've traveled this way before
and there is much to be learned."

"Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do."
