Too Darn Hot

So when I woke up this morning (or didn't wake up, depending on your definition of "awake"), it promised to be one of those days. One of which days, you ask?

A RECORD HIGH OF 105 WAS REPORTED AT BWI AIRPORT TUESDAY...JULY
6TH. THIS BROKE THE PREVIOUS RECORD OF 101 SET BACK IN 1999. THE
MAX TEMPERATURE OF 105 WAS TIED FOR THE SECOND HIGHEST MAX
TEMPERATURE ON RECORD. THE HIGHEST MAX TEMP ON RECORD IS 107
DEGREES SET ON JULY 10TH 1936.

One of those days. My valiant little window air conditioner was handling the situation remarkably well this morning, but I had no wish to overstrain the poor thing if I could possibly avoid it. So I went out into the heat (it had not yet reached 100 when I left the house, though it was close) and took Metro into DC to hang out at one of the Borders locations, where I spent afternoon and early evening looking at lots of books, reading bits of a few, resisting the temptation to buy a CD (though chances are good I'll buy it next month), eating an overpriced sandwich for lunch (and, later on, a brownie for supper (okay, you try making a nutritious meal out of the food choices at Borders)), struggling to stay awake in the comfy chair, and generally enjoying the air conditioning. I might also have enjoyed the music playing in the store if it weren't for the fact that I ended up sitting in a place where two different musical selections could be heard simultaneously. A few times I looked out the window to watch passersby, impressed by the determination of so many to act as if they weren't melting in the middle of the sidewalk. The people had turned into melted goo in professional attire, but they were melted goo with places to go and people to see.

Anyway, I can't tell you the names or even give a general idea of all the books I picked up, but I did end up reading more than 90 pages of Barbara Ehrenreich's Bright-Sided: How the Relentless Promotion of Positive Thinking Has Undermined America. Oh, if you'd rather look at pretty pictures, check out Dragons Love, a children's book by Stephen Parlato illustrated with some fun collages.

On the ride home, a little girl holding a sparkly cell phone was saying to it, "Where are you? I'm on the train. I can't hear you. I'm on the train. Will you be there to pick us up?" It sounded exactly like 80% of the adult conversations you'll hear on Metro. I'm not sure if anyone was listening on the other end.

It's almost midnight and the A/C finally seems to be cooling things off. Perhaps I will get some sleep after all! A good night's sleep would be very, very welcome.
