Some babbling, mostly unimportant
Wednesday, April 28th, 2010 01:19 pmAs is so often the case after a night of too little sleep, I had plenty of energy yesterday for doing various useful things around the neighborhood, though I wasn't feeling well enough otherwise to do all that I'd hoped to do. Today, after a night of about seven hours of sleep (not quite as much as I typically need), I am tired and dizzy and woozy. Also, migrainey. Hitting my head on a metal fixture while in the shower didn't help matters any. So instead of doing any of the other useful things I'd hoped to do this week, much less anything that's actually fun, I'm choosing to stay inside doing laundry, sorting through paperwork, and waiting for the migraine medication I just took to dial the pain back a notch.
Of course this isn't the best time for sorting through paperwork, so there really isn't much of that going on just yet. It's not just the fact that migraines in general make focusing on the printed page significantly more difficult, but that another recent bodily nuisance makes itself felt. See, for the last few weeks I've noticed that it's harder to change focus from objects in the distance to objects nearby (or vice versa). Since I've been noticing the problem only in the last few weeks, there's a good possibility that it may be a side effect of the Ritalin (stimulants in general can cause difficulties with accommodation). Then again, it may just be that my eyes suddenly remembered that they're over 40 now. So far I can deal with the problem by taking off my glasses when I need to thread a needle or read fine print, so bifocals would probably be more trouble than they're worth. Anyway, with the migraine on top of the new focusing problems, well, maybe I'm going to decide not to do much with that paperwork today after all.
On the plus side, last week's ophthalmologist visit went well. Aside from the focusing issues and the various longstanding issues I've got (nearsightedness, astigmatism, floaters), my eyes are fine. When the doctor said, "Your eye pressure is great!" I was more relieved than I'd expected. It seems I'd been more worried about the (very) slightly increased risk of glaucoma than I'd thought! Need to get new glasses soon, not so much because my prescription's changed as because my current glasses try to fall apart at least twice a day. Fortunately, Medicaid pays 100% of the cost for those, as long as the glasses are purchased at the right place.
It's a lovely, breezy spring day outside. With any luck, the pain will recede and I'll be able to tolerate a walk later on. In the meantime, it's time to get back to the laundry.
