Happy Tourist Season!
Wednesday, March 31st, 2010 08:04 pmThe famed Yoshino Cherry (Prunus x yedoensis) trees in Washington, DC reached peak bloom today! If you weren't at the Tidal Basin this afternoon, you've missed it! But of course there is a great deal else you haven't yet missed, since the Yoshino's blooming period could last a while and there are several other varieties of cherry tree blooming sooner or later. Plus, the National Cherry Blossom Festival is going on till April 11. Still, I thought today would be a lovely day to go downtown and watch the tourists, and I was quite right.
If you've been wondering why you haven't heard from me lately, here's what's been going on:
Saturday: Checked a few things out of the library, then went to hang out with the folks of Mad Science Coffee. Met out-of-town visitor
amberite, someone I had not previously known who seems to be quite a nifty person. Good morbid conversations, quality entertainment from the flying kitten, and tasty food made for an enjoyable night.
Sunday: Tired since MSC began and ended late, so I spent the day resting. Then Sunday night as I was trying to get to sleep, I suddenly felt feverish (the thermometer disagreed) and couldn't get to sleep for a few hours. Not my idea of fun.
Monday & Tuesday: Rested & read in bed, mostly, though I squeezed a little grocery trip in there somehow.
Wednesday: Woke up feeling energetic, though I could still use some sleep. Checked various sites online and saw that both the weather and the trees were expected to be beautiful today. Took some time to watch Casablanca for the first time in years, which is a great way to begin a day if you can manage it. Then I went into DC to wander amongst the cherry trees and other tourist attractions, occasionally offering helpful information to tourists. At least I hope the information was helpful, or at least more interesting than what they came up with on their own.
After a few hours of walking today, I've tired myself out again, so I'll probably go to bed early rather than read LJ. Since I haven't read anything posted since Saturday afternoon (my time), it may take a while before I can catch up. What have you lot been doing these past few days?
