Tuesday, July 29th, 2008 09:15 pmYou ever have one of those days when you wake up headachy, disoriented, dizzy, barely able to focus your eyes, and you feel only slightly better once you've tossed down a bit of tea, and you feel a little more nauseated after you've swallowed a bit of oatmeal, but you console yourself with the fact that, since the water was shut off for work on the water mains yesterday, there's no particular reason for it be shut off today? And so, just five or ten minutes after getting water from the tap for your next cup of tea, you go to the bathroom and strip off all your clothes so you can wash off all the accumulated grime and bodily fluids from the overheated night and early morning hours, and then you discover...
... you know exactly what I discovered at that point, right? Yeah. Sweaty nightgown back on, I'm waiting a few more minutes since the guys working out front told me the water should be back on soon. Good thing I had already given up on the idea of making it to today's one o'clock appointment.

I wrote the above in the early afternoon. The day did improve, largely because I decided after I (finally) showered that it would be a really good idea to spend most of the day in bed doing little or nothing at all. All the tea I've had since the water came back on has been strangely-flavored (mmm, rust), but I can live with that for a day or two. Did a load of laundry--various items that can get discolored by rusty water without causing me undue trauma--and that's about it for useful activity. Not expecting to get much done tomorrow either, though I will probably be wishing I had air conditioning here in the sultry afternoon.
Though today was kind of a waste, yesterday wasn't too bad. As noted earlier, the water was shut off for planned maintenance, so I decided to go into DC to wander around. Walked a while outside, eventually ending up at Union Station where I spent too much time in B. Dalton. Dangerous, dangerous place with overpriced books. Yes, I bought some overpriced books--but I've resolved not to be upset with myself about it, because they are books I am certain to want to be able to re-read. After all, one of them is a book I already own (C.S. Lewis' Till We Have Faces), but haven't seen my own copy of in lo, these many years. The local library system doesn't have a copy, I have no idea when I'll see my own copy again, so... yeah, I spent too much. At least I still have some money to spend, even though my changing weight has kept me buying clothes. Still need to spend a large chunk of cash on bed & mattresses sometime soonish, as well as a few other important items. But books are good things.
Just remind me never to go into tempting-yet-overpriced B. Dalton again, okay?
Aside from the books, my spending lately has been pretty thrifty--as in, I spent a little money at a thrift store I went to with
animangel the weekend before last, buying cheap clothes, very non-overpriced books, and a fun CD (the Stay Awake compilation from 1988, with people like Suzanne Vega, Sun Ra, the Replacements, Bonnie Raitt, Tom Waits (and many more!) doing interpretations of Disney tunes). Also bought a pretty, lightweight cotton shirt on sale in the men's department at Macy's. I hate clothes shopping, but having lightweight clothes that fit is important.
Other than the above, the only excitement I can remember recently is also from the weekend before last, when a housemate got free passes to see Dark Knight for himself, his brother,
animangel, and me. I have no deep thoughts about the movie at this point, but can say that it was a good way to spend a few hours.
Right, anything else I type tonight will be useless blather, so I may as well post the entry. Have a good night and/or day, everyone!
