Mmm... food.
Monday, February 4th, 2008 06:51 pmLast Friday, I was utterly exhausted for most of the day and didn't leave the house during daylight hours. After dark, though, I wanted salad, but I still didn't have the energy to drag myself all the way to the nearest well-stocked grocery store. So I walked to a nearby convenience store instead, hoping for some kind of salad-like thing at a reasonable price--fruit salad, egg salad sandwich, whatever--and still didn't find anything I wanted for a cost I was willing to pay. I went home a sad, sad hummingwolf.
Saturday, however, I had energy again, and made two trips to the supermarket to stock up on herbs, spices, various other things that happened to be on sale, and a few other things which seemed to go well with the sale items. For the last few days, my salad of choice has been: baby spinach leaves (aww, look at the baby spinaches), red grapes (on sale), peaches (one whole peach (chopped up) per salad), onion (chopped), bleu cheese (on sale and essential), a bit of cider vinegar, and either walnuts or fake lobster meat (on sale) depending on my mood of the day. No idea why this particular combination tastes like absolute heaven right now, but it does.
Even though the salad of choice does not have any spices in it, I am so happy about finally having the chance to stock up on them so my other meals can be full of flavor. It's been too long since I've been able to add a dash of sage or savory at whim! Now I remember why wars were fought over such stuff. In the coming months, it seems like a good idea to try to learn or re-learn how to cook tasty dishes. Now that the expensive ingredients are here, it shouldn't be hard to make grains and legumes taste interesting.
Hmm, there are still bits of onion and bleu cheese in the bowl. Perhaps another grape or two...
