Bits & Pieces

Left the house late Saturday afternoon. Came home again about ten last night. That was a fun party. :-) It was great to be able to help [livejournal.com profile] lyssabard celebrate her birthday! Since it was a LAN party and I wasn't playing, I wondered if I should bring an extra book... but there really was no need to worry, as there were plenty of good people and enough entertainment for everyone. I met a few folks new to me, skritched & was skritched by some people I've known a bit longer, ate too much, watched cartoons, followed people around as they went shopping, and generally enjoyed hanging out this weekend.

So many times, someone on my friends list will write something which I think someone else on my friends list would benefit from knowing, but the post will be, for good reasons, hidden under a friends-lock, and there will be no way I can think of to get one person to read what the other person has written without violating the confidentiality of one or both people. Since this has happened a few times recently, please just believe this: You are not alone. (What, you can't tell if I'm talking to you or not? Well, whoever you are--if you are reading this post, you are not alone. Okay?)

Since I've never been properly introduced to nostalgia and long considered myself immune to its effects, I don't know if that's the word for what I've been dealing with lately. But I have been in the mood to try to remember the past--both mine & the more distant past of some of my family. This morning, I kept thinking of phrases my father used to use all the time. When I was little and one of us was leaving the house for the day, he used to tell me simply to "Have fun!" In high school, when I would leave for the bus stop (or when I (or a friend of mine) was too late for the bus and he ended up driving me (or her and me) all the way to school), he used to say, "Have fun! Be good! Learn a lot!" By college, he'd even expanded that to include "Don't bring dishonor on the family name!"

When I asked Dad what sort of thing would constitute bringing dishonor on the family name, he'd stop for a moment to think about it, staring off into space. Then he'd look me in the eye and say, "In this day and age? I dunno." Eventually he just decided he didn't want me to end up as a guest on a daytime talk show.

Another favorite phrase we used, when one of us was acting in a way the other couldn't understand, was "What is your most manifest major mental maladjustment?!" Can any of you think of any more M words that might fit in that sentence? I've been thinking it too much lately not to want to add to it.

In early December 2001, a tune I could not identify began running through my head for no discernible reason. It's taken over my brain every once in a while ever since. It's running through my head now. I still haven't figured out what it is.
