"When readers decide that something is a poem, they read in a different way. As literary critics we would like to think that this is a more thoughtful way, more receptive to the text’s richness and complexity, but in psychological terms it is the same sort of reading produced by a dyslexic reader who finds reading difficult."

Study shows that butterflies have a purpose, dang it--at least when they're flying around with radar transponders on their backs. Speaking of those transponders: "You have to carefully remove the hairs from their back first," explains Lizzie Cant of Rothamsted Research in Hertfordshire, UK. "I give them a wax with Sellotape." Humans helping out butterflies with their hair-removal techniques. What a world.

In other news, after seeing a blog post about censorship in Get Fuzzy, [livejournal.com profile] languagehat2 decides to learn more about the beaver.

Friday evening, there will be a hybrid solar eclipse. Looks like it won't be noticeable from here, but some of you southerners should get a chance to see a (partial) show.

In personal news, I definitely overdid things yesterday. Had to spend most of today recuperating. I don't regret a bit of it.
