It seemed like I should have gotten enough sleep by now to be back to the usual moderate level of energy; yet here I was, not unsociable but not wanting to talk, not finding the mental energy to make those phone calls to bureaucrats, not having the physical energy to want to walk(!) even in good walking weather.

The fact that in yesterday's 60+-degree weather I felt compelled to wear a winter coat outside really should have been a clue.

Since I have more than fulfilled my quota for chronic ailments, I had thought I should be eligible for the exemption from infections and other acute ailments until at least 2008, but apparently the powers that be managed to lose those forms too.

(Okay, I didn't really find a place to apply for exemption from acute illness, but wouldn't that be neat? "Because of your exemption, you will not be required to get this year's scheduled attack of influenza. If you do receive this malady by mistake, please return it to your local office and report the error immediately. If there are any changes in your chronic illness, you must report these changes within 10 days, after which you will be scheduled for an in-person interview to determine whether you will be required to suffer a Schedule I malady (including but not limited to: influenza, pneumonia, a broken leg, earache, toothache, or the common cold). If you have any further questions, please call your case manager at the number printed at the top of this form.")

Oh well. I still have my sense of humor and my insides are mostly staying inside, so it could be worse.
