Friday, October 11th, 2002 07:25 pmJust had another conversation with the landlord about my current inability to pay the rent. Yes, he understands my situation, but he's also (quite understandably) anxious to get the money I owe him. I told him about some of the things I'm trying to do to get work and/or government benefits, but neither one of us is reassured by the slowness of my progress in those areas. I take some small comfort from the fact that people aren't exactly knocking down the door to rent the vacant room, so it's not as if he's got much chance of getting more money if he kicks me out rather than letting me stay a while longer.
In all honesty, I haven't done as much this week as I should have. While I did send off the disability essay and a few other pieces of useful mail, I spent virtually no time making useful phone calls. Mostly I've been spending too much time reading about the sniper and watching TV news. Though I know full well that a pedestrian like me is much more likely to be struck by a car than a bullet, I'm still spooked by all the shootings. Hopefully I'll be stable enough next week to go to my Tuesday appointment and do other necessary things.
Maybe I'll go to one of the local churches this weekend to find out if they have information that can help me with the job search and/or local charities--surely they must. If nothing else, I could probably use some pastoral counseling right about now. Though I haven't been going to any church regularly since moving here, the pastor at the United Methodist church might still recognize me.
Best shooting-related comment, in an article about the tarot card left behind at the school: "Lacking the basics of morality, the Suburb Sniper is now revealing himself to be one card short of a full deck." Yeah, I laughed at that. I'll take humor wherever I can find it.
In other news, the haunted house in the woods had a successful weekend last time, with hundreds of kids (as well as adults) and some good word-of-mouth publicity. Not sure how much business they'll do this weekend with all the rain we're having, but I can hear someone laughing out there now. May everyone involved have some good, clean fun.
