Sent this story to my favorite mailing list earlier and now realize I should've posted it here as well. So this is the tale where Optimus Prime goes to the Middle East:

CUYAHOGA FALLS -- A member of Ohio's 5694th National Guard Unit in Mansfield legally changed his name to a Transformers toy.

Optimus Prime is heading out to the Middle East with his guard unit on Wednesday to provide fire protection for airfields under combat.

"On Sunday, we were awarded as the best firefighting unit in the Army National Guard in the entire country," said Prime. "That was a big moment for us."

Prime took his name from the leader of the Autobots Transformers, which were popular toys and a children's cartoon in the 1980s.

He legally changed his name on his 30th birthday and now it's on everything from his driver's licence, to his military ID, to his uniform.

"They razzed me for three months to no end," said Prime. "They really dug into me about it."

"I got a letter from a general at the Pentagon when the name change went through and he says it was great to have the employ of the commander of the Autobots in the National Guard."

Prime says the toy actually filled a void in his life when it came out.

"My dad passed away the year before and I didn't have anybody really around, so I really latched onto him when i was a kid," he said.

Been reading many of the other news links posted over in [livejournal.com profile] theworld and wondering why I, who have been going insane recently, am still so much more rational than the movers and shakers of this little watery planet.

In spite of everything, I'm feeling better tonight. Went for a nighttime walk in the rain with rivulets running down my glasses as I sloshed through the puddles on the sidewalks and in the streets. Heard distant sirens most of the time I was out. This isn't too unexpected given how close we are to the fire department, yet it's still a sobering sound at a time like this. Now that I'm inside, the predominant sound is the rumble of rain on the roof. There are worse kinds of music.

For some reason, it felt good to walk in the downpour and splash through the puddles. Probably wasn't too smart to go walking after sunset, but I wasn't in the mood for walking earlier in the day. Oh well.

Now I'm waiting to hear that Optimus Prime got to talking with gefilte fish. And that one of them was on a tractor. Or maybe I've just been paying too much attention to the weird side of the news lately.

haha! if you find that story, be sure to post a link. [g] i understand about liking funny news right now. it occurred to me this morning, that for my health's sake, i am going to have to start filtering what i read and hear about it. the world goes on as it will whether i pay obsessive attention or mind my own business, you know? not that i don't care, but i'm hurting my body and soul with the stress of it.

oh, sorry, little digression there. here's to optimus prime!

Sad to say I'm not, really. My computer setup is too old to make downloading Yahoo Messenger feasible, and the Java version on the website didn't work for me for some reason.
