It's a Poll! Run for your lives!

Some of you have seen these questions before in a different format; but I thought that since a wonderful person got me a paid account, I may as well make this into an LJ poll. Let's see if I've done this right...

[Poll #99099]

Hey, my poll number is a palindrome!

Yes, I am a geek.

[identity profile] wig.livejournal.com 2003-02-05 12:46 pm (UTC)(link)
palindrome = super cool

See, that's what I thought. Of course it'd be cooler if it were a triangular number too, but one can't have everything.

Hmm. As I was filling it out, I realized that I was taking a route that could be constituted as superficial. I was choosing all the 'noble' answers. But I've dealt with all this stuff enough times so that I no longer have to guess or project... I have chosen my choices in real life and I'm happy with them.

I found it interesting that I'm the only one of ten people (so far) who would rather be ignored as trash than hated but respected. :)

It is interesting how adding that one little detail can make people who'd otherwise prefer to be ignored decide they'd rather be hated. I mean, I *know* what it's like to be the target of people's hatred and I *much* prefer not to be noticed, but still I pick respect over safety. Guess I've got just enough pride to be stupid once in a while. :-)

When I asked these questions elsewhere, i got pretty much every response possible, so you're not the only one I've seen to pick that answer. Surprising that nobody's picked the "Black & white" option here so far. Maybe that's too politically incorrect or something.

[identity profile] hai-kah-uhk.livejournal.com 2003-02-05 12:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. When I saw the black and white option, I considered asking your permission to fill it out again for Zephyr - he represents the B&W thinker deep down inside me. :)

But then I realized that he'd never have answered most of the other questions honestly, and as much fun as it is to fill out quizzes for a fictional character, it would probably skew your results for a not very good reason. :o\

Now other people have chosen the same "ignored as worthless trash" answer you picked, but still no-one has answered that they see the world in black & white. Hmm. Maybe you should have Zephyr answer it after all. :-)

those were exceptionally good questions, cb. i'm the one who said she'd want to be adored even as a false me. for a while. for a really crazy mad wild while. then i'll go back to being just-me. but when pressed, further down, i went for being accepted as my real self. (i'm also the one who kept the reputation while selling out. hey, i deny it!)

very thought-provoking.

Oh, other people picked those answers when I asked these questions elsewhere--you're certainly not alone. And the first question's actually a little difficult for me--the first option sounds like it'd be so much fun for a while!

[identity profile] unwilly.livejournal.com 2003-02-05 10:44 am (UTC)(link)
What I liked was the three way split on the last question 6,6,6. At least on Wed. I wonder if by default that makes, "many colors" the best answer?

I also like that it came out 666.

Heh.

As of right now the results are 7,8,8. Surprised nobody's picked the "Black & white" option yet. Nobody appreciates the classics anymore.

i am currently being told i am loved, but strugglign because they seem to be talking about the image of me they have and not me. it isn't fun. nor is this the first time i have dealt with it. bah. i am getting old enough that i just want to be quietly accepted.

and i have found that being hated, even with respect, means there is somehow Drah-ma dragged into your life. if i had energy for that, i'd work on the stage. people can think anything that want about me as long as they think it elsewhere.
heh. i am turning into an anti-social old coot. it's great.

i tried changing for people. didn't work. don't want to bother anymore.

and the principle thing goes back to the "i don't care what you think, just think it over there" theory. even when i manage to get the people i don't really care abotu opinions from to Go Away, i'm stuck with myself. i tried making me go away, but i either just hung around unwated or dragged myself along. *sigh* so i figure i might as well put some effort into getting along with me.

and it's all colours.
really pretty colours, though...

I know that being loved for who you're not is no fun when the image is wildly different from who you are. Yet the passionate option seems more fun if the image is one you think you can almost squeeze yourself into. Well, it seems more fun to me, though I still chose quiet acceptance.

No energy for Drah-ma here either. Mostly I think my answer came from being tired of lack of respect.

i have found that those who truely accept me respect me.

those who don't were handed their pink slips from my life, anyways.

oh... i guess i should mention that as a quadruple pisces, i am the inventor and bearer of the Universal Reality Remote. those who fall into the "i can't be bothered" catagory have been removed from my program list, anyway.

[identity profile] hummingwolf.livejournal.com 2003-02-06 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, people who do accept you will respect you. I simply chose not to offer that option on my poll. Makes things trickier that way.

That Universal Reality Remote must be incredibly useful. As a quadruple Libra, I'm just perpetually unbalanced. Heh.

The other obvious problem with the 'image of you' thing is that it always comes back to bite you in the arse. Especially if you allow it to perpetuate. I can't tell you how many times that's happened to me... when I filled the person's expectations pretty well for a while, but the first time I broke expectations, I paid dearly. And of course you can't always guess what those expectations are.

And I wasn't even allowing it on purpose. No matter how hard i tried to show myself to those people, they kept on replacing me with their cardboard cutouts. So now I try to break expectations on a regular basis... once an hour if I can manage it. :)

[identity profile] hummingwolf.livejournal.com 2003-02-06 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I hate being replaced with a cardboard cutout all the time. Sometimes, though, it appears to be necessary to camouflage yourself with the cardboard for a while, as many folks seem to have an aversion to dealing with non-stereotypes.

[identity profile] wig.livejournal.com 2003-02-05 12:45 pm (UTC)(link)
What interesting questions.

If I respect someone, I would rather have them hate me than ignore me, but if I don't respect someone, I suppose I'd rather have them ignore me.

Surely if you stick to your principles, you'll keep your reputation? Anyways I'm obviously willing to compromise my principles - I participate in the capitalist system every day. If I really stuck to my principles I would be living on a solar powered farm and growing my own veg, or something. Maybe someday.

I think I agree with you about people you respect vs. people you don't respect. Not quite sure though, as there isn't sufficient caffeine in my bloodstream yet.

Depends on what your true principles are, doesn't it? I mean, do you think it's better to try living on your solar-powered farm (with solar panels you made yourself, perhaps?) knowing that you don't have enough resources to succeed, or is it better to work within the system long enough to acquire the means to live outside it?

[identity profile] wig.livejournal.com 2003-02-06 12:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Well said. Yes, it depends! Things are so complicated. Why can't they just be black and white? I meant to fill in that check box for black and white as well as different colours. It's fun to see things in black and white sometimes, especially when you're convinced you're right, like I often am.
