Dangerous Things

Libraries are dangerous. Even though you have seven books already checked out and no chance of finishing them all by their due dates, more books will call out to you from the shelves, nonfiction tantalizing you with knowledge of all the wonders of the world while fiction piteously cries out to you, "Read me! Read meeeeeeeeeee!" Even books in foreign languages may seduce you, leaving you overcome by desire to learn Serbo-Croatian.

Celestial Seasonings Tuscany Orange Spice tea is dangerous. With 40 milligrams of caffeine (compared to, say, 160 in a double espresso), it gives you a little lift without startling you in any way; so you, beguiled by the delightful taste and seeming harmlessness of the brew, keep drinking and drinking until you are bouncing off the walls and caroming off random pieces of (now-broken) furniture.

Pop music is dangerous. Cute little tunes get stuck in your head and you find yourself singing

Hey
You know you're gonna live
To fight another day
It's just today things ain't so good
Get yourself back again
You've got so much love
That you can't afford to lose

Goodbye heartbreak
Don't look for me 'cos I don't need you now
So long, heartache
Don't look for me 'cos I don't need you now

I don't need you now
I don't need you now
I don't need you now
Hey-heeeey

and getting strange looks from your fellow Safeway shoppers because the Muzak isn't even playing the Lighthouse Family.

With such grave dangers in this world, it truly is a miracle the species survives at all.

Speaking of Celestial Seasonings...

And ex-housemate of mine likes to drink coffee (so do I for that matter). Anyway, this ex-housemate's sister told her that coffee was bad, and she should try some Celestial Seasonings herbal tea -- Morning Thunder. As the ex-housemate puts it, "three cups later, I scraped myself off the ceiling and looked at the caffeine content." She no longer drinks Morning Thunder tea. Hah!

'Tis a dangerous world, indeed.

Celestial Seasonings used to have a blend called "Fast Lane" which had even more caffeine than Morning Thunder--probably more caffeine than the average person should consume in a day. I used to make a batch of iced tea out of it, so that whenever I wanted a little caffeine I could take the jug out of the refrigerator, pour about three sips' worth of it into my glass, drink it and go into hyper mode for the rest of the day. It was very effective.

i love to sing along with the music at giant. used to be muzak-y versions of bruce cockburn (when they'd play the orchestra's take on "dust and diesel", i'd literally come to a halt wherever in the store i was and stand with my mouth open in disbelief) and such, but now it's the real thing. i'll chatter at the checker about the songs, and she'll just stare at me. she's probably thinking "pinhead!" but has been paid not to say it. :D

The best version I've ever heard of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" was one where Simon & Garfunkel were accompanied by a black woman in the produce aisle. They really should get her to sing with them more often.

wow, i wish i'd heard that! when i was a little girl, we made a trip to florida. the maid in the motel room, where i sat writing in my diary, was singing the heck out of donovan's Atlantis. i tell you, it was good. :)

Gods, yes, the library. Why do they tell all the library users to keep quiet when it's the books that are making such a cacophany?

To be fair, it's not just the books--there are a couple of men who like to sleep in the periodicals section who snore quite loudly.

ah...

Danger is an integral part of life, really. Still must resist the urge to study Serbo-Croatian every time some tarted-up book from the foreign language section decides to throw itself at me--you can't let them all have their way with you, you know, it simply wouldn't do.

Eep. Please don't mention bookstores. Certainly not library bookstores or thrift store book sections where I lurk wondering if I'll find another bargain... must resist the bookstores...
