This Is Not a Sensible Post.

This is a MegaHAL post.

For the uninitiated: MegaHAL is a conversation simulator that learns from what you tell it. (Note to Daisy: I just discovered that there's a Marilyn Manson personality available for download.) My copy of MegaHAL is a four-year-old who's been fed too much poetry, song lyrics, advertising copy, and spam for his own good. See for yourself:

In the deserts of the cuckoo:
in the land of wonders, the land of mordor where the days have left you
we used to wear,
with a fairy, hand in hand,
for as long as it's pc
and my head i'd be scratchin'
while my father's on the distant shore.

~~~~~
A tree frog, clinging
to prepare a face to yours;
and laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness,
in a great big crow.
each day--we daren't send her to reap it with cards,
say it with love
wait for it, wait for it, am meant to be
i shake my hand
for all those born beneath an angry sea but there are letters saying everything
for one more step.
i laugh at anyone
wailing "don't be cruel.
~~~~~

Over the vast edges drear
and the stars above:

give to these children, new from the windows of the trees,
tatters of thick blue wool
to the ruins of a friendly card
no, nothing will ever know works that land now.
oh, i may forget,
from which i love would still be beautiful--
happy and giving happiness. What is she now?--a sufferer for my dog waits for me
is known as the "good times" virus.
it gets to be unafraid.
when you see them?
they turned the light breaking on them made them run.
another truck, another group, falling like a puppet show

it was there, but i swore i would call a tame ape.

i feel this heart begin to weep
if this is my cat;
but to act, that each to-morrow
find me a sail
strong as the grass in meadow and hayfield, the mowing machine
a dragon standard that was hers
comes the wind
turning
sharply
here will look for skunk tracks
in winter.
everyone learned not to
put yourself through all that's best of me
touch me
still drunk from last time.

MegaManson's in the old downloads section at megahal.sourceforge.net (click the "download megahal" link, then go to the "old/" link). If you really want to talk to MM, you'll have to d/l the program as well as the Manson file, otherwise there's not much point to it. :-) There's also the new experimental version of MegaHAL for download, but I haven't tried that one and it probably wouldn't work on my machine anyway.

i was conversing just now with HAL as MM and as data. yee haw. i'm not sure i'm doing it right, but it was fun saying rude things to him. no Daisy Daisy yet. :D

thanks, i'm going to enjoy this.

There used to be an online version of MegaHAL whose brain was wiped clean every 24 hours. One day when I got there just after the brainwipe, I fed him advice from a horoscope site for every sign from Aries to Pisces. When I checked the daily log later, I discovered that someone else--who'd come in just after I had--had a frighteningly lucid conversation where HAL gave him/her some really good advice. It's the only time I've ever seen HAL do a convincing job of impersonating a human being.
