The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Good: A sweet friend sent me a check in the mail, with which I bought some food & other necessaries yesterday. Hooray for friends! Thanks, Amanda.
Bad: Still got the landlord breathing down my neck and I hate having to accept money & gifts from people who aren't doing too well financially themselves.
Good: Managed to walk 2.5 miles yesterday for the first time since I got that flu-like thing a couple of weeks ago.
Good: Spent most of yesterday organizing the piles and boxes of papers in my room so that I'd be ready to go apply for various state benefits again. Yep, I'm all ready to go apply for welfare this morning.
Bad: You'll note I'm not actually at the welfare office now. Maybe it was that 2.5 mile walk, but I'm too dizzy to stand in those lines and feeling a bit feverish. Doubleplusungood.
Good: I made a pot of split pea & barley soup yesterday with carrots & lots of garlic. Yum.
Bad: E-mailed an old college friend a few days ago and got messages that it's undeliverable. I hope the latest postal address I have for his family is recent enough for mail to get to him.
Good: Last night's new Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Not The Best Episode Ever, but quite good enough, especially the ending. Poor, poor Spike.
"Have you completely lost your mind?"
"Well, yes. Where have you been all night?"
Good: A guy walking around in the yard two houses down is wearing a bright orange shirt. I've got cravings for the color orange today, so this is great to see. Does anybody else get these color cravings, or is it just me?
Good: A pair of jeans that used to be too tight fit me just fine today.
Ugly: I so need a haircut.
Bad: Still got the landlord breathing down my neck and I hate having to accept money & gifts from people who aren't doing too well financially themselves.

one of the things i love about you is that you are capable of this reference.

I always thought the Newspeak appendix was the best part of that book. That could be only my inner linguist talking, though.

i'm feeling scattered. goods & bads. soup sounds great. hope you find your old college friend. i never crave colors but am often mightily glad to see them. i hate it that your landlord is hassling you. if you trust me with your name and address, please e-mail them to me, ok?

My landlord isn't hassling me, really, he's just understandably anxious to get some of the large amount of money I currently owe him so he can pay his daughter's college bills.
I'll send you my address in a minute. (One of these days we will have lunch, I just don't know when... but I look forward to it. :-) ) How'd you like today's warm weather?

i'll be in touch after i get the e-mail. oh, the heat. i prefer it under 80, so today was a little bit warm. tomorrow storms, the weather channel says? phooey! let's have some 72 degree days. ;)

Iva Davies probably has the most gorgeous singing voice in the known universe.
I'm with you on the 72 degree days. They said on the radio this morning that today's high would be about 15 degrees above average for this time of year. C'mon, it's time for Autumn already! (The Hummingwolf declaims this loudly to Mother Nature, who takes no notice at all. The neighbors are giving Hummingwolf some strange looks, though.)

no, i hadn't heard those songs. that's how it is that it can come as a total shocking surprise to me in 2002 to discover NIN or MM and go back 10+ years to catch up on them. it's like being Rip Van Vicki. ha!
weather is good today, but are you listening to WTOP? my son's school is locked down till the kids are sent home. how scary. jeff elected not to go down to campus, which is of course within a very few miles of wheaton/SS. brrrr.
i don't want to end on that note though. i'll think about the No Promises video and sigh and get all woozy. better? :)

Onto better thoughts--there's an album called The Berlin Tapes where Iva & Icehouse do a bunch of cover versions, from classic songs like Sinatra's "All the Way" and Velvet Underground's "All Tomorrow's Parties" to somewhat more obscure songs like XTC's "Complicated Game." Marvelous stuff. (Though I must admit that the cover of Public Image Limited's "Disappointed" gives me giggle fits that I don't think Iva intended. Oh well.)

I have come to the conclusion that good hair is actually more important than it really ought to be.
