Went to the school today to talk to their placement director, the person who gets paid to help their graduates find new jobs so the school can brag about how well their students do. Well, even she doesn't know how to help a 32-year-old woman who's never worked before get a real, paying job. So now she's calling in another person to attempt to help us all figure out what the heck we can do about me.

She seems to think we need to be clear about what motivates me. "What kind of work would you like to be doing?"

"Work I'm physically and mentally capable of doing that pays actual money."

"See, I want to be sure that the job will be a good fit for you. If the job isn't right for you, I'm worried that you won't be motivated. We need to find you something that you enjoy..."

I haven't been able to get through to her yet that impending starvation/homelessness/need for new CDs is an excellent motivating factor for me. Really.

I wanted to say more, but my brain has decided to compensate for the hot weather by freezing up. Good night, all.

Ask if the placement director job is open.

Nah, this one has potential. Unlike some I've dealt with previously, she realizes she needs to learn how to place people who haven't had jobs before and she is in fact trying to learn, rather than sitting at her desk glaring at me as if her steely gaze would somehow create a job history for me so she wouldn't have to work quite so hard. I just hope she & I & whoever else gets involved can figure something out before my money runs out entirely.

Gosh, you know, I'd present even more of a problem to a career placement person. (In fact, a few years ago I took a career planning course at UMUC, taught by a really nice man named John ... oh heck, I forget!) At almost 51, I have this job experience, post college: one year of secretarial work at SUNY Stony Brook. In '76. To me, you would seem to be Potential Personified! I hope they can come up with some really good leads for you, and I wish you altogether well. I also wish you good airconditioning today. It's gonna get ugly out there...

Thanks for the good wishes. I hope something works out soon--I could really use the money.

I could also use the air-conditioning, come to think of it. I'll have to ask my landlord to install one in my room sometime soon.
