A very nice boy called me up to ask me if I wanted the New York Times delivered to my home. In my usual way, I politely but firmly told him that nobody here was interested.
In the tone of one who is far too accustomed to being turned down yet still has some small hope that this time will be different, he asked, "No interest at all?"
It's been a long time since I heard that voice, but it's hard to forget. I wanted so much to tell him that even boys who can't find dates for the prom still can go on and get married and have babies, but I settled for saying, "Have a good day" as gently as I could.

Prom Dates
I never went to any prom until a few years later when I drove a friend and her boyfriend to her prom. I wore the little hat and everything. Opened doors, hung out with the other drivers, etc.
And then in 95, She invited me to her prom. And I panicked. And the rest is (painful) history.
Re: Prom Dates
I never went on any dates in high school. I would realize that a guy was interested in me only about three months after he lost all interest. The exceptions to this rule were the guys who asked me out because they figured I was one of the few girls desperate enough to say yes. Though I didn't have much sense as a teen, I did at least have enough sense to say no to the guy who bashed me over the head with a tennis racket in gym...
Wait, I can think of at least two non-loser guys I knew were interested while they were interested. Unfortunately, my friends talked both of them out of their interest before anything could be done.
Have I mentioned lately that I never had much luck with the dating thing?
