New Year's Eve Day

After a slow start (making me miss a doctor's appointment, rescheduled for Monday), I took a walk in the wind, managed not to get blown off course, and went to a local church where I talked with the secretary. After that, I went out in the wind again and it was really very remarkably windy. Yes, okay, I have been out during windier weather, but it was still remarkable enough for everyone to remark upon it.

Anyway, I made my way to a shopping mall and discovered that a toy store that's going out of business is a sad place to be. Leftover Christmas music playing did not help the mood in there as people rummaged through what was left of the nearly-empty store. Nobody had even bothered to turn on all the lights.

After finding nothing of interest in the toy store, I went clothes shopping. I hate clothes shopping. Sometimes I forget how much I hate clothes shopping because I'll go to places like Ross or Marshall's or Target, places where the clothes you want may not always be found, but you always know that just around the corner or an aisle or two away there will be books or toys or chocolate or something else that's actually interesting and not so costly you must restrain yourself from screaming when you see the price tag. But today I was in one of those stores with clothes as far as you can see, clothes either too bland or too tacky but always more expensive than they should be. Standing at a rack sorting through sweaters or bras trying to find one that might be suitable in my size for a price that won't leave me gasping for breath if I even think about trying to pay it is not my idea of fun. Bleh.

On the happy side: You know those little Lego sets that stores normally sell for four bucks in an effort to get people to buy them on impulse? I found a couple at Target for less than ninety cents each. Happy Nearly New Year!

If only they made clothes out of Lego principles: infinitely customizable, and always fitting the maker.

Yes, it was a sad, sad KB Toys store. I probably should have bought some batteries there since they were half-price too. Oh well.

When I was a kid, I always thought I hated shopping. As I got older, I realized that it was shopping for clothes that I hated--especially bras and shoes because both seem designed to cause maximum pain to most people with genuine human bodies. It's much more fun to shop for food, books, music, or toys!

That sounds infinitely preferable to the system we have now. What imp came up with the idea of the fashion industry, anyway?
