You know, since our government affects every human being on the planet, I think every human being on the planet should be able to vote for the US president. Obama would win by, oh, about 5 billion votes...

Let's see...I was born in a town called Hurst, TX. My parents mved from there when I was a toddler. Haven't lived there in nearly 40 years. Do I get to vote for their mayor?

Since we no longer live in an era of city-states, the answer would be no.

Ugh. Honestly, I hate to imagine the kind of campaign promises politicians would end up making to try to win the votes of all of China... or better yet, some country where you just know the elections are full of voter fraud anyway. We have vote fraud on a fairly minor scale, relatively speaking. Can you imagine trying to keep track of all the systemic abuses in those other countries all over the world?

My point exactly. But it should work two ways - if they don't get to have a say in our government, then our government should have no say in how they do trade or anything else.
