For fellow fans of House, M.D.: The Metaphorical Medicine of House. Includes bits of interview with the technical advisor for the series.

The 2007 International Privacy Ranking from Privacy International. According to this report, the U.S. privacy record isn't the worst in the world: in 2007, this country actually ranked better than Singapore, Russia, China, and Malaysia. Woohoo! We only did worse than nearly everyone else on the planet. On the plus side, as about half of you lot have already noticed, "A telephone company cut off an FBI international wiretap after the agency failed to pay its bill on time, according to a U.S. government audit released on Thursday." While one must admire the elegance of the checks and balances set forth in the United States Constitution as well as the nobility of much of the Bill of Rights, one sometimes suspects that the greatest guardians of freedom in this country are general laziness and incompetence.

On an entirely different note: Ghee Happy, "a brand that celebrates Indian/Hindu mythologies and culture thru design and storytelling in a fun and charming way." Do check out the free Kali desktop. (This is one of those links where it's hard for an outsider to tell just how serious/reverent/etc. the artist is being. That odd Spiderman Ganesh photo going around a while back was from an actual Ganesha festival, was a serious attempt to meld East and West, even as it seemed to so many people that it must have been blasphemous. So I at least feel compelled to reserve judgment about the cute little deities, just admiring the cuteness.)

Last and probably least, a link for my own reference, though it could be useful for anyone else with an analog TV: The US Government's TV converter box coupon program.

There was going to be more to this post, but I decided I was too sleepy to say it.

i found that Spiderman Ganesha to be in poor taste... (i don't think the fact that it was created by Hindus for a Ganesha festival matters. They may not have intended to be "blasphemous," but the melding of Ganesha with Spiderman just didn't make any sense. There aren't many similarities between the two, and it created an overall impression that Ganesha was just a storybook character and not a deity.)

However, this "Ghee Happy" stuff is adorable. It is done with reverence for the actual stories and personalities of the deities described. The style may be cartoonish, but this guy isn't the first to use childlike art to portray Hindu gods and goddesses. To me, the difference is that the artwork doesn't downplay the divinity of its subjects; it preserves the accuracy of the iconography. i find the drawings very appealing and sweet. In fact, i am now jonesing for a copy of that cute book!

Thanks for the link :-)

There have been recommendations to wait for late summer or later to get your coupon. More converters will be on the market then and cheaper. The coupons are only valid for 90 days.

Wellll, rather a lot of popular religious expression is in poor taste, no matter what the religion. It's enough sometimes that one wonders if "tacky" and "religious" might be near synonyms. That doesn't necessarily make it blasphemous.

the melding of Ganesha with Spiderman just didn't make any sense.

In some stories, Ganesha started out in the form of a human child, only becoming part-animal--and gaining some of that animal's qualities--as a result of tragedy. He was also intensely loyal to family and exhibited fierce courage even when opposed by forces much more powerful than he (which is how he got into trouble in the first place). And if he doesn't have the proportionate strength of a spider, that mouse he rides on surely must! Even if they do have their differences, I bet Ganesha and Peter Parker would have a lot to talk about, preferably over a good feast with lots of sweet dumplings for dessert.

I'm glad you like the "Ghee Happy" link, at any rate! The cute little Kali still seems strange to me.
