Questions of the Moment

Why does LJ's autosave feature save drafts of boring posts but lose everybody's interesting ones?

Boxes of a dozen large eggs are on sale this week, so I bought a box of brown ones instead of my usual box of eight large white. Why, when it usually pays to buy in bulk, are the boxes of eight usually cheaper per egg than the boxes of twelve? And why did it take me until just a few minutes ago to figure out why eggs are on sale for such good prices this week?

Why is it that most of my body is telling me this would be a great day to go for a nice, long walk in the city when my poor, still-blistered feet would rather bury themselves in a nice, soft carpet instead?

My red clown nose is trying to peel off. As it was thoroughly sunburned on Tuesday, this is understandable. But why does it feel like my eyeballs are trying to peel off as well?

I finished a large canister of plain oatmeal this week and opened up a new one. The lid on the new canister split in half, so I tried putting the new oatmeal into the old canister. I understand why you don't put new wine in old wineskins, but why can't I put 42 ounces of new oatmeal into an old 42 ounce canister? Even after a couple servings of the new oatmeal have been consumed, there are still several ounces left over that just won't fit.

Why do birds fall down from the sky every time you walk by? And why has it been so long since I last listened to the Carpenters?

I like seeing Gurdonark's mind at work. No questions about that.

Why are they forecasting a mostly cloudy day for Easter? That just isn't right.

Why do I eat when I'm not hungry but forget to drink something when I'm thirsty?

And here's a question someone may be able to answer: What tree or other plant began pollinating in significant amounts within the last few days? I've been doing better than usual this allergy season, but really started sniffling on Thursday.

Okay, okay!! I'll do some laundry. Geez, pick pick pick.

"And why did it take me until just a few minutes ago to figure out why eggs are on sale for such good prices this week?"

Why do eggs get cheaper for Easter, while roses get more expensive for Valentine's Day?

"why can't I put 42 ounces of new oatmeal into an old 42 ounce canister?"

The act of pouring it from one container to the other fluffs it up. You know the old label warning "Sold by weight not by volume, contents may settle during shipping"? Try tapping the old container with new oatmeal on the counter. Have the lid on it so stuff does not go flying. I mean, unless you want stuff to go flying.

I can answer the oatmeal question. It's air.

Yeah. Air's the culprit. As you transfer the flakes from one container to the other, they become less densely-packed. At least, that's the best I can do without a fishtank, 126 ounces of colored water, a scale, three goats and a Lithuanian nun.

Your poor feet. I hope you ignored most of your body and gave them a rest.

Why do eggs get cheaper for Easter, while roses get more expensive for Valentine's Day?

Eggs are cheap to begin with, so grocery stores can easily use them as a loss leader--put 'em on sale for a good price and hope shoppers will be led to buy the more expensive foods nearby. Roses, on the other hand, may be the only thing someone intends to buy at the store, so if you want to make money off those customers you've got to charge them lots of money.

I dunno. I'm guessing here.

As for the oatmeal: Good answer! I didn't have the patience to try to get all the new oatmeal in the old container, but I did manage to fit some more in there. Decided to eat the rest for supper, so I've got some good soluble fiber in my belly now.

Yes, that is the right answer! Or if it isn't the right answer, it's certainly a plausble one.

I'm wondering why you needed 126 ounces of colored water. Surely 84 ounces would be enough?

Welll, I didn't walk as far as I wanted to. Did go to the store to buy some laundry detergent, though. I'll be happy if I can obtain new shoes sometime soon.

The extra water is what you're concerned about?

Well, sure. The goats are obviously there to keep the nun in line.
