Morning thoughts through a looking-glass (darkly)

People become what they focus on. This is why, while it may be useful to know what you are fighting against, it is urgent and necessary to know what you are fighting for.

People who are going toward someplace, get there. The way may seem long and arduous, but they carry their destination with them.

People who are trying to escape someplace, find, like Alice, that all roads lead to that same place and they always wind up walking through the same door. Sometimes, unlike Alice, they no longer recognize the place, only knowing that they still feel the same need to escape. They too carry their destination with them.

I need to figure out what it is I'm fighting for. Otherwise I run the risk of turning into a stressed-out bureaucrat, and nobody wants that.

Now, HERE, you see, it takes all the running YOU can do, to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!

Yes. This is the essence of my current mission. Most certainly!

This strikes me as very profound. I love what you said - "they carry their destination with them." I shall ponder that.

Well said, and timely.

I am considering my destination at this moment, too.

Yeah, it's one of those things I need to think about. I've been focused on bureaucrap for far too long now.

Maybe it's profound, but lately it's become a little too obvious in the people around me! I figure if it's obvious in them, it's going to be obvious in me too... and I really need to focus on better things.

Yay!

(I felt a need to respond to this, but I have no idea what to say. Don't mind me. :-))

Not only is this a wise and important insight, but it made me realize another connection between the Alice books and John Crowley's Little, Big. Remember that Alice is through the looking-glass, so it might seem she's doing the opposite of what she's really doing; this is true of Auberon Drinkwater and his little park, where to get out he must go further in.

I'm not sure how this applies to your insight, except that sometimes in real life you may think you're moving away from your goal, but you're really working towards it, or the reverse--but that makes the right goal more important, not less.

Thanks for the comment. I'm not really up to intelligent response right now, so I'll just say that I really need to remember to check out Little, Big one of these days, since I still haven't read that one!
